The Guardian recently highlighted Israel’s treatment of Palestinian minors in two articles written by Harriet Sherwood.

The first piece published on January 22, 2012, mentions that minors are accused of throwing stones and flinging Molotov cocktails, but Sherwood does not consider these to be “weapons” or “serious offenses”. Several Israelis have been killed and numerous others injured by Palestinian stone throwing.

The second article published on January 23, 2012, refers to British government concerns about Israel’s treatment of Palestinian minors, including criticism of Israel by Labour MP Sandra Osborne who is seen here with Hamas PM Ismail Haniyeh.

Most of the details of alleged abuse come from Defense for Children International (DCI) which was also the main source for similar articles in The Australian written by John Lyons, discussed in greater length below. Sherwood’s article also refers to a report conducted by B’Tselem.

According to the B’Tselem report, out of 835 Palestinian minors arrested and tried in military courts in the West Bank from 2005 to 2010 on charges of stone throwing all but one were found guilty. That number is in stark contrast to the material provided by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (IMFA) and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) which shows that the conviction rate was 62.8% for 2009, 57.3%, in 2010 and 58.62% in 2011.

Sherwood claims that “few parents are told where their children have been taken. Minors are rarely questioned in the presence of a parent, and rarely see a lawyer before or during initial interrogation. Most are detained inside Israel, making family visits very difficult.” According to material provided by IMFA and the IDF, the recently approved Amendment 10 to the Security Order (Judea and Samaria) 5771-2011 provides all minors under the age of 18 with a court-appointed defense attorney, the presence of a parent or relative during every hearing and the notification of a parent about any investigation. The amendment was made on September 27, 2011, about 4 months prior to Sherwood’s article.

Both articles by Harriet Sherwood claim that Israel could be in breach of the Fourth Geneva convention but the Fourth Geneva convention does not place any obligation on Israel to apply Israeli civil law in the West Bank.

In July 20, 2011, she was in a boat off Gaza reporting on fishing restrictions enforced by Israel due to security reasons, where she tweeted that Israeli gunboats were preventing them from going further out to sea. However, according to her own GPS coordinates, she was outside the 3 mile permitted zone.

A detailed analysis of 138 articles written by Harriet Sherwood shows a clear pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel slant.

Former Guardian columnist Julie Burchill confirmed there was “striking bias against the state of Israel” at the Guardian and Honest Reporting awarded The Guardian its 2011 “Dishonest Reporting Award” due to at least 10 incidents of misleading anti-Israel coverage.

The Australian

John Lyons is the Middle East correspondent for The Australian and in an article he penned entitled, “Stone Cold Justice“, Lyons states that Palestinian child prisoners are treated differently from those in Israel.

According to Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yigal Palmor, “Israel is obliged under international law to apply to the West Bank the legal system that was in place before it became occupied in 1967, so it is therefore neither surprising, nor a cause for outside international concern, that the rules for minors accused of offenses there are different to those in Israel proper.” Sandra Osborne, also mentioned in the Guardian articles

The article publishes a statement from British MP Sandra Osborne, also mentioned in the Guardian articles who claims that “… A whole generation is criminalized through this process.”According to Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council executive director Colin Rubenstein, the reason Palestinian minors are jailed, and Israeli civilians are injured or killed is because of “the exploitation and indoctrination of children by both Palestinian terror groups and by the Palestinian Authority official education system and media.”

John Lyons has a history of writing articles critical of Israel. In this November 2010 article, he blames Israel for the failure of the peace process. In another June 2010 article, he claims there is a food shortage in Gaza and that Israel is responsible for it. The fact is that Israel allowed over a million tons of humanitarian aid to enter Gaza from January 18, 2009 to June 5, 2010.

The main source for the article was Defense for Children International (DCI) represented by Australian lawyer, Gerald Horton. Despite the name of the organization, there is no mention on its website of Israeli children who suffer due to rockets from Gaza and Palestinian suicide bombings. However, Defense for Children International does have a separate and comprehensive Palestinian website which details alleged abuses committed by Israel.

DCI’s president, Rifat Odeh Kassis, is a Palestinian who supports the Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. DCI calls on Israel to recognize the right of return for Palestinian refugees, supports the Goldstone Report and called for sanctions against Israel after the Gaza flotilla incident. In addition, the group accused the Israeli military of committing war crimes in Gaza and published a list of Palestinian children killed in the conflict that was later contradicted by Palestinian sources.

According to DCI-Palestine’s annual report, revenues in 2010 were $1.2 million. Its funding comes almost exclusively from European countries. Board member Shahwan Jabarin, had been denied entry into Israel and Jordan due to his past involvement with the Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist group.

Other sources John Lyons used for his article include Yesh Din, No Legal Frontiers and Breaking the Silence. According to Emily Schaeffer, a lawyer employed by Yesh Din, “Yesh Din was founded to use law as a tool to fight the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.” No Legal Frontiers does not list its funding sources or staff. but it’s newsfeed prior to 2011 was based on DCI-Palestine reports. Breaking the Silence receives the majority of its funding from foreign sources and accused the Israeli military of committing “war crimes” in Gaza.

Kevin Rudd is the current foreign minister and former prime minister of Australia. Following the publication of Lyons’s article, Rudd instructed “Australian diplomats in Israel to take up the matter with Israeli authorities.”

Rudd has “echoed the call of US President Barack Obama in May, calling for two states divided along 1967 borders, with appropriate land swaps.” He also wants Australia to abstain from a possible United Nations vote on Palestinian statehood. This may be seen as an attempt to gain support from Muslim countries for “Australia’s campaign to gain a temporary seat on the UN Security Council.” Several prominent Australian politicians expressed concern after Australia changed its voting record at the UN in November 2011. Australia abstained from two anti-Israel resolutions and voted in favor of a third resolution that was critical of Israel.

Despite asking Israel for concessions, Kevin Rudd has not made similar demands from the Palestinians. He also criticized Israel’s decision to build 1100 new homes in the Jerusalem suburb of Gilo. He has asked Israel to adhere to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and subject Israel’s nuclear facility to IAEA inspections. Rudd had also expelled “an official from the Israeli Embassy in Canberra over the Dubai passports affair.”

John Lyons could not be reached for comment. At the time of publication, Kevin Rudd’s office and The Australian, had not responded to the Algemeiner’s request for comment.

Vorige week vloog de mufti van de Palestijnse Autoriteit flink uit de bocht met zijn oproep de Joden te doden. De kritiek die hierop kwam leidde er echter niet toe dat de Palestijnse Autoriteit (de mufti is door Abbas persoonlijk benoemd) hem duidelijk maakt dat dit niet acceptabel is, of, beter nog, hem de laan uitstuurt. Nee, hij wordt in bescherming genomen en de Israelische kritiek is ‘opruiing tegen de Palestijnse nationale en religieuze leiders’, het zijn ‘beledigingen van de Palestijnse religieuze symbolen’ en men noemde de Israelische veroordelingen ‘een grove aanval op Sheikh Hussein en een schending van het internationale recht’. Bij de Palestijnen is iedere kritiek een schending van hun rechten, symbolen en volk, en een belediging van alle moslims en hun heilige Jeruzalem, maar de manier waarop ze de volkomen gerechtvaardigde Israelische kritiek wegzetten als betrof het hier de grofste mensenrechtenschendingen, overtrof mijn verwachtingen. Het spreekt natuurlijk ook boekdelen over al die duizenden andere Palestijnse aantijgingen van het meest vreselijke wangedrag door Israel. Misschien kunnen Westerse journalisten, politici en mensenrechtengroeperingen deze eens iets kritischer gaan bekijken?

Palestinian Media Watch's exposure of the PA Mufti's speech citing the Islamic tradition (Hadith) that anticipates the killing of Jews by Muslims has brought Israeli and international condemnation of the Mufti and the Palestinian Authority.

The PA has rejected this international condemnation, calling PMW's exposure of the story and the responses "incitement" against Palestinian leaders, and called for "international human rights organizations to denounce the brutal attack against [Mufti] Sheikh Hussein, since it runs contrary to international law."

The following are some of the Israeli and international condemnations of the PA Mufti followed by a senior PA religious leader's rejection of the condemnations as "incitement," and the NY Times' coverage of the story:

Israeli President Shimon Peres to Justice Minister:

"President Shimon Peres met with Justice Minister Yaakov Ne'eman and asked him to take steps against the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Sheikh Mohammed Hussein who called to kill Jews. 'Israel's law enforcement must use all means to prevent such calls,' said Peres."

Following PMW's exposure, the Mufti and PA's Minister of Religious Affairs defended the Mufti's quoting of the Hadith, saying it was merely a quote from an Islamic source, not intended to incite to hatred, and not relevant for today's context. However, the Mufti's words introducing the Hadith and following the quote clearly shows that he intended to apply the Hadith about Muslims killing Jews within the context of today's conflict.

New York Times:

"Prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, called on the leaders of the Palestinian Authority to condemn remarks by its top cleric, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, who recently recited an ancient Islamic text at a ceremony broadcast on Palestinian Authority television advising that Judgment Day will come only when the Muslims fight and kill the Jews.

"Whoever wants peace should not permit such incitement and should not allow calls to murder Jews," Mr. Netanyahu said Monday. ...

The mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Hussein, addressed a crowd at an event marking the 47th anniversary of the founding of Fatah, the mainstream movement led by the Palestinian Authority president, Mahmoud Abbas. He quoted a hadith, a saying attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, stating: "The Hour will not come until you fight the Jews. The Jews will hide behind stones or trees. Mr. Netanyahu described the words of the mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Hussein, as "morally heinous" and compared the remarks to those of Haj Amin al-Husseini, the grand mufti of Jerusalem who notoriously aligned himself with Hitler in the 1930s. Palestinian television broadcast the mufti's comments on Jan. 9 and Palestinian Media Watch, an Israeli monitoring group, drew attention to them on Jan. 15. An Israeli official said that the prime minister became aware of it only in the past few days.

The mufti denied calling for the killing of Jews, telling Israel Radio on Sunday that he was only quoting the words of the Prophet Muhammad. He told Voice of Palestine radio on Monday that "these allegations come within the Israeli incitement campaign against Jerusalem and its figures."

Als Israel iets goed doet, kan het niet deugen

Onlangs ben ik uitgebreid ingegaan op de zogenaamde ‘pinkwashing’ aantijging en het fenomeen dat Israel juist wordt bekritiseerd om de goede dingen die het doet. Het is één ding wanneer mensen Israels wandaden overdrijven en uit hun contekst halen, maar wanneer je een land ook gaat bekritiseren wanneer het slachtoffers van een aardbeving helpt, zieke kinderen geneest, zorgt dat de gezondheidszorg goed geregeld is of homo’s goed behandelt, dan zit er toch een klein steekje los. In de woorden van Elder:

In other words, there really are people out there who would prefer that a few more Japanese would die than to have Israel save them.

They wouldn't admit it, of course, but it is a fair bet that anyone who ever uses the term "XXXwashing" in a derogatory way towards Israel is, deep down, one of these who would prefer to see the victims of disasters die than have to deal with Israel saving their lives.

Het ongelofelijke is dat ‘pinkwashing’ inmiddels al een begrip is dat respectabele kranten als het NRC haalt.

Elder voorspelde onlangs dat ook de crosswashing in opkomst is. Immers, in Israel neemt het aantal christenen toe terwijl hun aantal onder de Palestijnse Autoriteit juist afneemt. Dat doet Israel vast expres, om de Palestijnen de schuld te kunnen geven.

There are real people out there whose blood boils when they see photos and stories like this. They would prefer that Israel never does anything admirable, because to them, demonization of the Jewish state is their entire raison d'etre, and this stuff makes it harder. for them to do their job.

In other words, there really are people out there who would prefer that a few more Japanese would die than to have Israel save them.

Trouw (donderdag 19 jan.) hekelt in haar hoofdredactionele commentaar de in haar ogen te kritiekloze houding van Nederland tegenover Israel. Het is een veelgehoord geluid tegenwoordig. Israel zou de stichting van een Palestijnse staat 'eindeloos uitstellen', Oost Jeruzalem verder annexeren, en een Palestijnse staat onmogelijk maken, en Rutte zou dit beleid aanmoedigen. Netanjahoe kwam, aldus Trouw, naar Nederland om ons te bedanken voor de steun in internationale organen, zoals de VN Algemene Vergadering en de UNESCO.

Daarmee beloont Nederland geen fout beleid van Israel, maar verzet zich tegen fout beleid van de VN. De Palestijnse strategie om zaken buiten onderhandelingen met Israel om te regelen, en Israel zo voor voldongen feiten te plaatsen, werkt averechts en daarmee ondermijnt men de onderhandelingen. Abbas is daarover zelf heel expliciet geweest; hij kan het zich permitteren zich in de onderhandelingen zo onverzoenlijk op te stellen omdat hij op brede steun in de VN en de EU kan rekenen. De noodzaak pijnlijke concessies te doen aan Israel in ruil voor bijvoorbeeld een bouwstop, overdracht van meer gebieden en meer bevoegdheden, is niet nodig nu de rest van de wereld deze zaken (en meer) van Israel verlangt als eenzijdige concessie. Het was dus verstandig van Nederland om deze strategie niet te steunen en een tegenstem te laten horen bij de VN en UNESCO.

De UNESCO staat overigens bekend om haar eenzijdige pro-Arabische beleid. Zo hekelde men Israelische werkzaamheden en archeologisch onderzoek bij de Mughrabi brug toen die in 2007 ingestort was, ook al is die ca. 60 meter van de Al Aqsa Moskee verwijderd en had deze op geen enkele manier in gevaar gebracht. Arabische werkzaamheden in de Tempelberg waarbij unieke Joodse artefacten bij het afval werden gedumpt negeerde zij echter. Ook heeft zij Rachels graf bij Bethlehem als moskee erkend (sinds 1996 pas zo genoemd door de Palestijnen) en dat gelijk gesteld met de millennia-oude Joodse betekenis van die plaats. UNESCO werkte verder ook mee aan de promotie van Oost Jeruzalem als culturele hoofdstad van de Arabische wereld. Daarmee werd de exclusief Arabische claim op dit deel van de stad, waar eeuwenoude Joodse gemeenschappen in 1948 met geweld werden verdreven, versterkt en de Joodse geschiedenis weggepoetst. Recentelijk bleek bovendien in een tijdschrift voor Palestijnse tieners dat UNESCO meefinancierde propaganda voor Hitler te staan. Kortom, de UNESCO is, alle mooie woorden ten spijt, helaas verworden tot een anti-Israelisch propaganda instituut.

Trouw zit er op meer punten naast. Israel annexeert geen delen van Oost Jeruzalem, maar heeft dat al in 1980 gedaan met de basiswet over Jeruzalem, zodat de gehele stad nu onder Israelisch civiel bestuur valt. Alle Arabieren die er woonden is het Israelische staatsburgerschap aangeboden, maar dat weigerden de meesten. Daarom hebben ze nu een 'residentie' status en mogen wel voor de lokale verkiezingen stemmen maar niet voor de Knesset. Ze kunnen vrij reizen door Israel en delen in de sociale voorzieningen, en daarom wil een grote meerderheid geen inwoner worden van een te vormen Palestijnse staat. Er worden overigens ook geregeld Joodse huizen afgebroken in Jeruzalem, en Arabische gebouwd, dus de idee dat Israel de Arabieren wegpest en zo de stad verder 'verjoodst' is een mythe. Er wordt wel meer in West Jeruzalem geïnvesteerd, en omdat veel Arabieren de lokale verkiezingen boycotten zijn ze niet goed vertegenwoordigd.

Trouw wijst er tot slot op dat Netanjahoe zelf gezegd zou hebben dat het conflict onoplosbaar is en hij er daarom niet zijn best voor doet. Dat mag zo zijn, maar geldt evenzeer voor Abbas, die zich in de Washington Post in 2009 in vergelijkbare bewoordingen uitliet. Beide partijen pretenderen dat de tijd aan hun kant staat en dat de ander met concessies over de brug moet komen. Achter de schermen lijkt men elkaar soms desondanks te zijn genaderd, zoals in 2008 toen Olmert de Palestijnen een vergaand voorstel deed, waarop nooit een duidelijke reactie kwam. Uit de Palestine Papers bleek dat de Palestijnen zelf ook met vergaande voorstellen waren gekomen, maar weigerden erover door te praten: het was slikken of stikken.

Het is daarnaast verontrustend dat de PA via haar eigen media een heel ander geluid laat horen, en terroristen nog steeds als helden worden geëerd. Zo werden Joden onlangs in een preek die op het officiële PA TV station werd uitgezonden de bron van alle kwaad genoemd. Ook riep de moefti van de PA nog op 9 januari op tot genocide op de Joden door de moslims, verwijzend naar een Hadith.

Netanjahoe zei donderdagavond in Nieuwsuur dat wanneer de veiligheid van Israel wordt gewaarborgd, er veel mogelijk is en de Palestijnen een grote kans laten liggen door niet te willen praten zonder voorwaarden vooraf. Ook zei hij dat beide partijen natuurlijk hun voorwaarden hebben waar een vredesverdrag aan moet voldoen, maar dat je die tijdens de onderhandelingen bespreekt. Dat klinkt plausibel, en het is zeker niet gebruikelijk dat juist de zwakkere partij met steeds weer nieuwe eisen en voorwaarden komt aanzetten voordat er überhaupt gepraat kan worden. Dat Israel ondertussen doorbouwt op land waar de Palestijnen een staat willen stichten is inderdaad niet erg bemoedigend, maar er is een bouwstop geweest buiten Jeruzalem en ook die heeft de Palestijnen niet tot onderhandelen gebracht. En Oost Jeruzalem al op voorhand 'weggeven' is voor Israel terecht onaanvaardbaar. Naast een bouwstop eist Abbas bovendien dat Israel op voorhand de pre-1967 wapenstilstandslijn als grens accepteert, en soms komt hij met nog andere eisen aanzetten, zoals het vrijlaten van een aantal gevangenen en wat al niet meer. Netanyahu wees er in het interview donderdag ook op dat een bouwstop tijdens eerdere besprekingen geen voorwaarde vooraf was. Ikzelf zou zeggen, dat wanneer de Palestijnen een bouwstop eisen, daar dan ook een voorwaarde vooraf van Israel tegenover mag staan, zoals erkenning als Joodse staat of echt eens een einde aan de opruiing en verering van kindermoordenaars in Palestijnse (PA gecontroleerde) media.

Jerusalem Post over Trouw artikel prenatale zorg

Het begon met een artikel vol afgekloven cliches over het Joodse volk en Israel in Trouw. De schrijfster had in Israel een gezonde baby gebaard en dat klopte natuurlijk niet; daar zat wat achter. In een stuk vol cliches, insinuaties en vage klachten zette ze Israel als een land neer dat, gebukt onder trauma's, van kinderen krijgen een door de staat aangestuurde militaire operatie heeft gemaakt waarbij niks mis mag gaan en waarbij gewone moeders niks in te brengen hebben. De staat zou veel en gezonde kinderen eisen. Beelden van eugenetica kwamen boven. Brrr, wat een eng land en volkje. Dit schoot een aantal Israeli's en sympathisanten van Israel in het verkeerde keelgat. Men stuurde stukken in, stelde vragen aan de krant en de auteur, maar die gaven geen krimp. Zeker, kranten zijn vrij en ook controversiele dingen moeten gezegd kunnen worden. Maar dit stuk stond niet op de opiniepagina als column maar onder 'jodendom' in "De Verdieping" en bevatte zowel feitelijke onjuistheden als gemene insinuaties.

Hierop volgde verschillende tegenstukken, die echter niet in Trouw werden geplaatst en een artikel van Missing Peace, dat door Honest Reporting werd overgenomen. Vervolgens wijdde de Jerusalem Post er een artikel aan, en dat leidde weer tot een bericht in het Katholiek Nieuwsblad.

Ik ben benieuwd of Trouw nog gaat reageren. Mogelijk verschijnt er alleen een brief van de hoofdredacteur waarin hij zich verdedigt en indirect ingaat op de kritiek, zonder een van de critici zelf aan het woord te laten. Zo deed men dat ook naar aanleiding van de kritiek in 2010 op een artikel dat beweerde dat er geen Joods volk is omdat er geen genetische verwantschap zou zijn. Overigens stond er een paar dagen geleden alweer een negatief artikel over Israel in Trouw, van Dries van Agt.

Men lijkt in toenemende mate slechts oog te hebben voor één kant van het conflict, en één stem aan het woord te willen laten. Niet mensen zo goed mogelijk informeren lijkt het doel, maar mensen hun mening manipuleren en continu een beeld naar buiten brengen alsof Israel niet deugt, een kunstmatige staat is die het moet hebben van Europese schuldgevoelens over de holocaust. Af en toe wordt een tegenstuk geaccepteerd, vaak niet. Maar waag het als criticus niet het a-woord in de mond te nemen, want dan probeer je de vrije meningsuiting tegen te gaan door op mensen hun schuldgevoelens in te spelen.

Overdreven, al die ophef over een artikel, waarin een vrouw haar eigen ervaringen meedeelt? Het ergste vind ik zelf dat Trouw geen tegengeluid toelaat en niet op vragen en kritiek ingaat. Daarmee roepen ze dergelijke acties over zich af, en zoeken critici andere wegen om hun visie over het voetlicht te brengen.

Anti-semitic stereotypes in Dutch paper spark anger

"The chosen people have to be perfect," wrote journalist Ilse van Heusden of childbirth in Israel's health care system.

BERLIN An early January article in the Dutch Christian daily Trouw sparked criticism in Israel and the Netherlands because the journalist invoked allegedly stereotypical anti-Jewish views and compared the process of giving birth in Israel's health care system to military combat.

Writing in Trouw, or "allegiance," about the birth of her child in Israel, Dutch journalist Ilse van Heusden titled her article "The chosen people have to be perfect."

"To be pregnant in Israel is comparable to a military operation. Countless echoes and blood tests should produce the perfect baby, nothing can be left to the luck of the draw. The state demands healthy babies, and a lot of them, too," she wrote. Van Heusden did not identify in the article the name of the medical center where she gave birth.

According to critics, she used skewed language to bash the Jewish state by militarizing every aspect of Israeli life, and employed forms of Christian anti-Semitic language to attack Israel's right to exist.

Israeli NGO Missing Peace, a watchdog organization that monitors anti-Israeli sentiments in the Netherlands, first criticized van Heusden's article in a report last week on itswebsite. Speaking on the phone with The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Yochanan Visser, the head of Missing Peace and the author of the report, said, "Trouw's anti-Semitic article about prenatal care in Israel is in fact just another example of how most Dutch media demonize and delegitimize Israel."

Visser, an expert on Dutch- Israeli relations, who made aliya from the Netherlands in 2000, wrote in his website report, "Apart from distortions and lies the article contained many accusations and insinuations that are reminiscent of classic anti-Semitic rants."

Visser told the Post: "Since the average Dutchman bases his opinions on the biased mainstream media reporting about Israel, the conclusion is justifiable that the Dutch media are accomplices in the rise of contemporary anti- Semitism. The 'chosen people' article in Trouw should therefore finally trigger a public discussion about the way freedom of speech is misused to bash and demonize the Jewish state and to promote renewed Jew hatred in the Netherlands."

Willem Schoonen, the editor- in-chief of Trouw, denied the article is anti-Semitic, in a telephone interview on Monday.

He said the paper got "loads of e-mails on the story, negative e-mails."

When asked why the readership response was negative, he said for the same reasons of anti-Semitism that are being leveled against the paper. He flatly denied the article is bashing the Jewish state, and said van Heusden wrote about "experiences from a pregnant woman coming from a different background" and dealing with a "new chapter in Israeli society."

"Anti-Semitic reporting is not the way to win a new readership. Certainly for us," said Schoonen, speaking from Amsterdam.

Political and media commentator Tom Gross told the Post on Monday that "by standing by the article the editor of Trouw is on very dangerous ground here."

"He seems to be ignorant of the classic centuries-old anti- Semitic stereotypes about 'the chosen people' and linking Jews to money, and to the blood of Christian children.

"This is particularly disturbing coming as it does in the Netherlands. Contrary to popular myth, Holland had one of the highest levels of collaboration with the Nazis in Western Europe. 75 percent of the country's Jews were murdered, a much higher percentage than countries like Belgium and France."

Visser disputed van Heusden's use of statistics as flawed in order to support her criticisms about child allowance rates, pre-natal care tests, infant mortality rates, and the overall quality of medical care in Israel. When asked about van Heusden's journalistic method of verification and her sources, Schoonen, said "this has not been finalized. I will have to verify the statistics with her."

According to the Missing Peace report, a Trouw reader critical of van Heusden wrote on the paper's website: "Subtle article by the way, it even manages to bring good infant care in Israel in the vicinity of 'eugenics' and thus comparing it to Nazism."

The global media watchdog organization, Honest Reporting, publicized Visser's report on its website and encouraged its readers to file formal complaints to Trouw and comments on the paper's website. The Jerusalem-based group Honest Reporting debunks slanted reporting against the Jewish state.

Palestijnse activist in Gaza neergestoken na kritisch artikel in Ma'an News

De Palestijnse mensenrechtenactivist Mahmoud Abu Rahma werd afgelopen vrijdag door gemaskerde mannen aangevallen en neergestoken bij zijn woning in Gaza, nadat hij op 5 januari in Ma'an News in een kritisch artikel het falen van zowel de PA als Hamas aan de kaak had gesteld. Hij overleefde de aanval.

Over de misstanden op mensenrechtengebied die hij aankaartte, is vreemd genoeg weinig te horen van de vele VN-organisaties die zich met Palestijnse rechten zeggen bezig te houden.

NB: het betreffende artikel op de website van Ma'an is gisteren nog geupdate; onduidelijk is wat eraan gewijzigd is?

Gaza Activist Stabbed After Exposing Hamas Use of Human Shields

U.N. Must Condemn Latest Hamas Brutality

GENEVA, Jan. 17 - The stabbing in Gaza of a Palestinian rights activist after he exposed Hamas' contempt for its own people by using them as human shields, and after he criticized the radical Islamic group for torture, abuse and trampling free speech, should be strongly condemned by the United Nations—both as an attack on the victim’s human rights, and on the idea of freedom of expression.

Masked attackers on Friday stabbed Mahmud Abu Rahma multiple times in the back, leg and shoulders, it was revealed today.

This latest attack on a rights activist underscores Gaza's brutally enforced intolerance for any discourse other the anti-Israel mantras of Hamas, which rules the area with an iron fist.

The attack only proves the simple truth of the victim's words.

Abu Rahma's crime was publishing an article in the Palestinian press that dared to criticize Hamas' "outrageous attack upon free expression and peaceful assembly" over the past year, and the "hundreds of cases of torture and abuse."

Abu Rahma also dared to publish basic facts about Gaza that completely contradict the Hamas narrative, and that of the UN's Goldstone Report, which repeatedly found "no evidence" that Hamas used civilians as human shields.

What is remarkable is that with all of the massive UN resources ostensibly dedicated to protecting Palestinians—the 16-member Division for Palestinian Rights, the 20-odd resolutions on Palestinians last year by the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council's special agenda item on Palestinians at every session, resolutions on Palestinians by UNESCO, the WHO and numerous other agencies, the full-time post of "Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Palestine" held by Richard Falk—still, with all that and more, the world body somehow managed to turn a blind eye to the massive violations of Palestinian rights described by Abu Rahma (click here for source):

• Although Abu Rahma considers Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other terrorist organizations to be “resistance groups,” he said they "show little or no care for people's life and well being.”

• “Military training sites function and are located in places very close to neighborhoods and/or schools, from where acts of resistance, including firing rockets, also occur.” As a result, “The population of these locations are inevitably vulnerable to Israeli attacks.”

• “Numerous people were injured from live fire coming from resistance groups training sites; including children and at least one man who lost his eye.”

• “There is a training site in the town of Beit Lahiya that threatens people every day, including a girl who was injured inside her school when an explosion occurred in this site on Sep. 20 2011.”

• “Explosions also occur frequently in densely-populated areas around Gaza, and have their victims, many of whom are children.”

• A man in the al-Nasser neighborhood in Gaza city, whose house is near a military training site, “complained to the resistance members many times. He explained the family’s fear for their life and house. But he was told the family could move out of the area, even if they had no resources to move. He died the way he feared most: tragically.”

• “The state of carelessness from the part of resistance is also causing continued victims of the misfiring of home-made rockets that fall on houses inside Gaza. Many of the victims are children and all of them are civilians who happen to be in their homes.”

• “There are more victims of shootings from, or explosions in, training sites. Many children are killed or maimed when explosive devices left in the streets or farms explode in their hands. And there is the young man who was shot in the legs for daring to publicly criticize a local resistance leader.”

If the UN's colossal pro-Palestinian infrastructure would have truly done its job and reported the above simple facts about Hamas perfidy to the world's attention, it is fair to ask whether Abu Rahma would have been assaulted for writing his article.

The incident raises serious questions about the ability of the Palestinians to create a democratic state where people feel free to question their government without fear of being seriously injured or killed for doing so.

The attack should be immediately denounced by Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, by Irina Bokova, the director general of UNESCO, the world agency mandated to uphold press freedom, and by Frank La Rue, the UN Human Rights Council's Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression.

The attack is also serious enough for its implications that even the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, should personally condemn it.

Antisemitic and Anti-Israel Articles on Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Website

Introduction

The website of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) in Egypt, Ikhwanonline.com, contains articles with antisemitic motifs, including Holocaust denial and descriptions of the "Jewish character" as covetous, exploitative, and a source of evil in human society. While articles of this tenor have been posted on the site in the past, their posting has recently taken on greater importance in light of the group's increasing strength following the ouster of the Mubarak regime, as reflected by the results of the recent parliamentary elections.

In addition to antisemitic content, articles on the site also include praise for jihad and martyrdom, and condemnation of negotiation as a means of regaining Islamic lands. Among these are articles calling to kill Zionists and praising the September 9, 2011 attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo – which one article called a landmark of the Egyptian revolution. Some senior officials in the MB's Freedom and Justice party published articles on the site expressing reservations regarding the peace agreement with Israel and insisting that Egypt was entitled to amend it.[1] Such statements contradict assurances by Freedom and Justice party head Dr. Muhammad Mursi to senior U.S. officials that the MB would honor all international agreements signed by Egypt.[2]

This paper will present excerpts of articles posted on the MB site, dated both before and after the revolution.

MB: The Jewish Character Is Still a Source of Evil in the World

In a June 2011 sermon posted on the website, MB in Egypt General Guide Muhammad Badi' discussed the Jews, their traits, and their actions: "Allah warned us against the deceit of the Jews and their dangerous role in sparking wars: 'Whenever they kindle a fire for war Allah puts it out, and they strive to make mischief in the land; and Allah does not love the mischief-makers [Koran 5:64].' Their hands light the hidden fuse... [and] little time passes before the fire spreads to the field of war, including Islamic lands... The war in Sudan and its division are their handiwork; the internal struggle and war among the Palestinians is [likewise part] of their plan. [For this reason,] the reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah angered them..."[3]

Following the May 2010 Gaza flotilla incident, a writer on the site named Mahmoud 'Abd Al-Rahman discussed "the Zionist Jewish character": "For ages, human society has faced the problem of the Zionist Jewish character. All nations and cultures are in agreement over the nature of the disease intrinsic in the Zionist character... namely sanctification of money, sex, robbery, interest, and treachery... We saw this in pharaonic Egypt, and in the Canaanite, Amalekite, Babylonian, Persian, and Roman [eras].

"The amazing thing is that all the nations dealt with the [Jewish] character in the same manner: by excising this tumor that has harmed all of humanity. We see this disease in the holy books – how the prophets suffered from [the Jews'] treatment. The Torah relates something that no sensible person can understand: in the Book of Jeremiah, Chapter Four, Verse 22, God expresses a desire to avenge His own people, because there is no other option: 'My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.'

"In the New Testament, Jesus calls them a 'brood of vipers' and 'sinners'... The [Jewish] character – both from within and from without – is exposed most clearly in the Koran. Allah has shown us is its secrets...

"We see [the Jewish character discussed] in the texts of the great writers, such as Shakespeare in his characterization of the Jewish merchant Shylock, in his work The Merchant of Venice. The author Charles Dickens provides the most detailed and accurate description of the Jewish soul, its materialism, prodigality, extreme removal from all values, and exploitation of workers and laborers.

"Analyzed psychologically, the Jew is a self-centered individual. He believes that God has not created his equal in the world, that he is the salt of the earth, and that God has given the [other] nations to him as slaves...

"Indeed, the way [the Jews] are regarded today has been passed through the history of the nations. During the pharaonic era, it was written on the tomb of [the pharaoh] Marnephtah, 'The Egyptians have annihilated the Zionists [sic].' An even clearer account is provided in the Tel Al-Amarna letters from the pharaonic era [and in what is related about how the Jews were treated under] Sargon II, king of Assyria, 730 BC; Nebuchadnezzar, [king of Babylon,] 597 BC; Pompey the Roman and Titus after him; the Prophet Muhammad, who exiled [the Jews] from the Arabian Peninsula; 'Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, who exiled them from Jerusalem, and in Medieval Europe. [The treatment of the Jews] was the result of the fact that they were the cause of the calamities [afflicting] the peoples [among which they lived]..."[4]

Against the backdrop of the discussion over Egypt's reconsideration of its peace agreement with Israel, and in the wake of the 2011 cross-border attacks near Eilat, Israel, in which seven Israelis and five Egyptian soldiers were killed, Dr. Muhammad 'Ali Dabour, member of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) and lecturer at Cairo University, wrote about the Jewish nature: "Throughout all of history, the Jews have failed to keep their word. They always employ a double standard and act in their own interests, even if it means destroying the entire world... The Koran informs us: 'Certainly you will find the most violent of people in enmity for those who believe (to be) the Jews and those who are polytheists [Koran 5:82].' Allah, may He be exalted, [also] said: 'But on account of their breaking their covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard; they altered the words from their places...' [Koran 5:13]. Breaking agreements and treaties is easier for [Jews] than drinking water or breathing air. Such are the Jews. Such is Jewish nature. Though they flatter, act hypocritically, and embitter the entire world, we Muslims must not be deceived by them..."

On the exile of the Jews from the Arabian Peninsula, Dabour wrote: "Our Prophet remained beholden to and upheld the agreement [he made with the Jews], but the Jews of the [Banu] Qaynuqa tribe were the first to break an agreement with the Messenger of Allah, as a result of which he exiled them from the city [of Medina]. The same was the case with the Jews of the Banu Nadhir tribe, whose character was that of traitors and scoundrels, considering that they broke their covenant with the Prophet and plotted to kill him... The same is true of the Jews of the Banu Qarayza tribe, who betrayed the Muslims, signing a covenant with the confederates in the Battle of the Trench and causing the Muslims distress.[5] The Prophet besieged [the Banu Qurayza] until they surrendered, and was saved from their wickedness and treachery."[6]

As early as October 2010, Dr. Isma'il 'Ali Muhammad, lecturer at Al-Azhar University, published a series of articles on "the nature of the Jews according to the Old Testament and the Talmud." In one article, he wrote: "It would not be an exaggeration to say that the [Jewish] character is still a source of evil and harm among all human societies... The main reason for the Jews' deviousness throughout history is the ideological and religious background they have handed down and on which they were raised, generation after generation, and which [ingrained] in their hearts the trait of [self-]sanctification and [self-]aggrandizement...

"When one reads the Old Testament, the Talmud, and the ideas born of them such as [those found in] The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the rulings of the rabbis, and the streams of Jewish ideology, one finds in them an open hostility toward all people. The Jews' deviant behavior is directed at all humanity... The holy ideological sources – according to their belief – permit them to act hypocritically and treacherously, and to unjustly throw to the dogs the lives, property, and belongings of non-Jews."[7]

In another article, he claimed that Jewish tradition taught the Jews to be "so criminal that they are unparalleled in all [other] human societies. It incites them to annihilate the non-Jews and to spread ruin and destruction throughout the non-Jewish world..."[8]

'Ali Muhammad concluded his series of articles with the following message: "The entire world must know the truth about the Jewish character, abominable values, and religious background, so that it can grasp its enmity toward humanity and take all necessary steps to protect itself against its wickedness. We Muslims should [recognize the Jewish character] better than anyone else. There is no doubt that our preparations for war with our enemy must include – if not begin with – recognizing its character..."[9]

Articles on MB Website Deny Holocaust, Accuse U.S. of Fabricating "Tale" of Jewish Extermination

Fathi Shihab, who is responsible for the MB's labor dossier, wrote that the Holocaust was a "tale" which Israel used as political leverage whenever it faced international criticism for its crimes and massacres. He said that "world Zionism" had succeeded in extracting a resolution from the U.N. that International Holocaust Remembrance Day would be marked every January 27, and said: "The entire world, and Germany in particular, have become yearly scapegoats of world Zionism, and have capitulated to the greatest political extortion in history."

He went on to describe the Holocaust as "a tale invented by the American intelligence apparatuses with the Allies' collaboration during World War II, in order to harm the image of their German adversaries and justify the great destructive war against the Axis countries' military and civilian installations – and especially to justify the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the persecution of the defeated countries' military chiefs in Nuremburg and Tokyo's courts.

"The victorious [Allies] operated according to the law of the jungle in trying their adversaries for crimes they themselves had invented. [The Allies] exploited the illegal immigration of millions of Jews from Europe to the U.S. during the war years by claiming they had disappeared in the Nazi prison camps. This was despite the fact that Germany's registry data show that the number of German Jews [prior to the war] was between 600,000 and 700,000, half a million of whom remained [alive] after [the war]. Add to this the fact that the number of Jews who died of 'natural causes, road accidents, and Allied attacks' amounted to several thousand. How [then] can it be claimed that the Nazis killed six million Jews, when there weren't more than 700,000 [to begin with]?...

"Western scientists and philosophers have unmasked the greatest lie in human history. The most famous of these are:

"1. Robert Faurisson – professor of literature at France's University of Lyon and one of the prominent figures in the stream that reexamined European history. He described the claims that Jews were killed with poison gas as an economic and political fraud...

"2. Henri Roques – received a PhD from France's University of Nantes; proved that the informer [Kurt] Gerstein, who reported to the Allies on the existence of gas chambers... in fact never saw any.[10]

"3. Roger Garaudy – in his book The Founding Myths of Modern Israel, he exposed the Israeli claims, exaggerations, and lies, including the tale of the Holocaust and other tales on which Israel has drawn [to justify] its existence...

"4. Norman Finkelstein – American author who in 2001 published his book The Holocaust Industry... According to him, the claim of the Jews' extermination was exploited by the U.S. to two ends: the first, to justify Israel's criminal policy against the Palestinians; and the second, to justify American support for this policy..."[11]

Tel Aviv werd afgelopen week verkozen tot Best Gay City van 2011, maar toch deugt er niets van, volgens onze progressieve media.

Er is zelfs een aparte term voor: Pinkwashing. Het betekent dat Israel de -relatief- goede positie van homo's en lesbo's in het land misbruikt voor propagandadoeleinden. Het woord wordt niet alleen gebruikt door notoire Israelhaters als Anja Meulenbelt, maar is ook doorgedrongen tot de mainstream media. Zo had De Pers er niet lang geleden een stuk over, en NRC Next, dat op 20 december kopte: 'met roze sopje een slecht imago te lijf'. 'Israel kampt met een imagoprobleem', aldus de Next, en 'Pinkwashing moet dat veranderen, maar met homorechten is het in Israel niet best gesteld'. Een Israelische professor verduidelijkt het in het artikel nog eens: 'Israel gebruikt homorechten als vijgenblad voor gebreken in de Israelische democratie en mensenrechtenschendingen door Israel'.

Het is waar dat Israel in haar 'public diplomacy' de homorechten benadrukt, naast andere onderdelen van de Israelische samenleving die gunstig afsteken bij de omliggende Arabische staten, zoals democratie, vrijheid van meningsuiting, vrijheid van religie en vrouwenrechten. In al deze zaken is Israel niet perfect, en gebeuren soms dingen waar ik me zorgen over maak en waarover ook in Israel zelf fel wordt gedebatteerd. Vergeleken bij de omliggende landen is Israel echter een walhalla in deze opzichten. Vraag een willekeurig iemand, zelfs een Palestijn, of hij liever in Israel of Syrië in de gevangenis zit en liever door Israelische of Egyptische agenten van zijn bed wordt gelicht.

Die vergelijking mag Israel van het verlichte journaille en mensenrechtenactivisten echter niet maken; ze zou hiermee slechts goedkoop willen scoren. Maar waarom niet? Israel heeft wel met deze landen te maken, wordt erdoor bedreigd, moet haar grenzen ermee bewaken en regelingen treffen voor bijvoorbeeld grensverkeer. En in het conflict met de Palestijnen en de Arabische landen geven steeds meer mensen Israel de schuld, en vergroten Israelische fouten uit, terwijl de situatie in Arabische landen en onder de PA onbesproken blijft. Het is niet meer dan logisch dat Israel en mensen die met Israel sympathiseren daar tegenin gaan. Dit kun je op zijn best eenzijdig noemen, maar 'pinkwashing' veronderstelt een kwaadaardigheid die er simpelweg niet is. Nederland, ieder land, benadrukt zijn sterke kanten naar buiten toe, en doet tegenwoordig aan 'branding' van zijn imago. Het benadrukken wat positief is is net zo legitiem als het geven van kritiek. Elder of Ziyon, die het fenomeen ook besprak op zijn blog, wijst wat dit betreft ook op de vele negatieve berichten naar aanleiding van Israels hulp voor Haïti en in andere rampgebieden. Telkens wanneer Israel iets goed doet wordt dat in een verdachte hoek geplaatst en in het negatieve getrokken. EoZ schrijft:

Strident critics of Israel look at the state through a single lens: one that shows Israel to be a purely evil entity whose entire raison d'etre is the subjugation and oppression of innocent Arabs. There are no shades of grey, no other issues at play everything Israel does is somehow connected to its inherently evil nature. (Shulman's "proof" is that homophobia still exists in Israel, as if there is anywhere on the planet that it has been eradicated.)

Since the critics define Israel this way, they assume that Israel defines itself this way as well. If Israel exhibits any whiff of charity, or liberalism, or kindness it is nothing more than a smokescreen to cover for its genocidal, racist ways. The idea that Israel has both good and bad parts, or that different Israelis (outside the enlightened anti-Zionist variety) can ever do something different or orthogonal to their real goal of oppressing Arabs, is simply not possible. If some Israelis start a charitable organization it is not because they actually want to help people, but because they want to cover up their constant crimes. Kindness and morality are not possible, so any examples must really be sophisticated manifestations of Israel's inherent evil.

Kortom: wanneer Israel iets goeds doet of iets in Israel goed geregeld is, dan doet men dat uit propaganda-oogpunt, om misdaden te verdoezelen en ons goyim zand in de ogen te strooien. Maar, zo zullen sommigen zeggen, Israel gebruikt het wel heel opvallend in haar public diplomacy en ondertussen valt op die homorechten nog wel wat af te dingen. De Israelische professor in het NRC artikel wijst erop dat homo's in Israel niet kunnen trouwen, de adoptiewetgeving discrimineert en homostellen in Jeruzalem niet hand in had durven lopen. Het is inderdaad niet perfect in Israel, net zomin als in Nederland overigens, en in Amsterdam durven homo's ook al niet meer hand in hand te lopen vanwege de bedreigingen en pesterijen van vooral Marokkanen. Het homohuwelijk dat wij kennen is vrij uitzonderlijk. Ik ben er trots op, maar dat geldt voor lang niet iedere Nederlander. Ik heb zo de indruk dat homo's het in Oosteuropese en Zuideuropese landen moeilijker hebben dan in Noord-West Europa. Het is waar dat de huidige Israelische regering meer zou kunnen doen tegen homodiscriminatie en voor homorechten, maar ook dat geldt voor veel landen waaronder Nederland.

Wanneer Israel iets goed doet en gunstig afsteekt bij niet alleen de Arabische landen en de Palestijnen, maar bij een groot deel van de wereld, zijn er verschillende manieren om dat in een kwaad daglicht te plaatsen. 'Pinkwashing' is daar een goed voorbeeld van, net als de idiote verhalen van Israelische hulpteams die eigenlijk in Haïti waren om de organen van die arme slachtoffers te stelen en te gebruiken voor Joden, of in een gematigder versie daar ook hun slechte imago zaten af te wassen. Wanneer Israel vluchtelingen opneemt, Palestijnse kinderen opereert aan ernstige hartziektes, kennis over goede landbouwmethoden en waterbesparing deelt met derde wereldlanden etc. etc. dan doet het dat allemaal slechts om van dat rottige imago af te komen, niet uit humanitaire overwegingen.

Een ander voorbeeld is het walgelijke artikel in Trouw over de te goede prenatale zorg in Israel. Deze is zo goed, dat kan niet deugen, en dus zit er vast wederom een duister motief achter: men wil perfecte baby's hebben want het 'Uitverkoren Volk' moet perfect zijn. Vandaar de vele testen en onderzoeken en de grote bezorgdheid om het ongeboren kind. De schrijfster, voormalig webredacteur van de Volkskrant, beviel in Israel van een gezonde baby maar schreef een grote klaagzang tegen de prenatale zorg in Israel.

Wanneer Israel iets goeds doet dan is het ofwel uit propagandamotieven of anders zit er wel een Holocaust trauma achter, of de zucht naar werelddominantie, en dit alles is natuurlijk overgoten met de superioriteitsgevoelens van het Uitverkoren Volk. Het is een meesterlijke truc om alles wat Israel doet in het negatieve te trekken. En het werkt, vooral omdat kwaliteitskranten en journalisten er grif aan meewerken.

In Trouw stond vorige week een behoorlijk suggestief artikel over, jawel, de goede prenatale zorg in Israel. Dit is het bewijs van een zeer gevaarlijke mindset, het uitverkoren volk wil namelijk perfecte baby’s, de vuile racisten! Het aantal kindersterftes is zelfs lager dan dat van Europese landen. Schandalig.

Hieronder nog wat cijfers over de gezondheid en levensverwachting van Israeli’s:

A new report released Wednesday by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals encouraging figures about the healthcare situation in Israel.

Israeli life expectancy is among the highest in the world, and fifth among OECD countries, infant mortality rate is among the lowest in the world, and a significant improvement has been recorded in the treatment of chronic diseases.

And yet, Israel's situation is not so good when it comes to the treatment of asthma and lung diseases.

According to the report, most OECD countries recorded a significant rise in life expectancy rates in recent decades thanks to the improvement in living conditions, public health interventions and the improvement in medical care.

Israel has one of the world's highest life expectancies, standing at 81.6 years in 2009 – about two years more than the OECD average of 79.5. Japan had the highest life expectancy in 2009 – 83 years.

The difference between male and female life expectancy in Israel in 2009 stood at 3.8 years in favor of women. Men live 79.7 years on average; women live 83.5 years. This difference is relatively low compared to the OECD average, which stood at 5.5 years in favor of women.

Why is it so? The answer may be found in the report's other data. Infant mortality rates in Israel, like in all other OECD countries, have dropped in recent decade. The Israeli rate is relatively low, standing at 3.8 deaths per 1,000 births, compared to a 4.4 average in OECD countries.

Living longer after heart attack, stroke

A significant drop has been found in mortality from heart disease. While in 2000 some 8.1% of heart patients died in Israeli hospitals within 30 after being hospitalized, the average in 2009 stood at only 4.1%. According to Israeli figures, heart disease mortality rates fell from 7.1% in 2000 to 4.5% in 2009.

A drop was also recorded in mortality from stroke: The death rate at Israeli hospitals within 30 days after hospitalization due to a stroke fell from 5.1% in 2000 to 3.5% in 2009, compared to a more moderate drop in OECD countries (from 6.2% to 5.2%) over the same period.

Surviving cancer

Additional encouraging figures can be found in cancer survival rates, thanks to early diagnoses and improved treatment over the years.

For example, women's survival rate five years after the diagnosis of breast cancer increased in OECD countries from 79% in 2002 to 84% in 2009. In Israel, breast cancer survival rates are even higher – up from 80.5% in 2002 to 86% in 2008.

The survival rates for colorectal cancer five years after diagnosis are higher in Israel compared to the OECD average, up from 58.7% in 2002 to 64.7% in 2008.

Better treatment of diabetes

An improvement has also been recorded in the treatment of diabetes: In OECD countries, 50 out of 100,000 adults are hospitalized every year for uncontrolled diabetes. In Israel the rate is particularly low, standing at only seven out of 100,000 adults despite a 6.5% diabetes prevalence rate among the population, similar to the OECD average.

Insufficient treatment of asthma

Nonetheless, the report's authors rebuke all countries, including Israel, for the community treatment of different chronic diseases like asthma. This disorder should be efficiently treated by a family doctor or pediatrician (in other words, in HMOs), and yet 52 out of 100,000 adults aged 15 and up were admitted to hospitals for asthma in OECD countries in 2009.

Hospital admission rates for asthma in Israel are even higher, standing at 68 per 100,000 adults. Hospital admission rates for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are also higher in Israel, standing at 229 per 100,000 adults compared to the OECD average of 198.

Obesity rate lower than world average

When it comes to obesity, Israelis have a reason to be proud. According to the report, obesity rates have doubled and even tripled in many countries since 1980. In more than half of the countries, more than half of the population is overweight, with the United States ranking first.

The lowest obesity rates were recorded in Japan and Korea, while the Israeli average stood at 14% in 2009 – lower than the world average of 17%.

State participates in 58% of health expenses

In light of the encouraging figures on life expectancy and mortality from diseases in Israel, the public and private spending on healthcare make comes as a surprise. The country with the highest healthcare spending in 2009 was the US, with $7,960 per capita, 2.5 more than the OECD average.

In Israel, on the other hand, healthcare spending per capita is 30% lower than the OECD average, totaling $2,164 in 2009. In addition, the per capita spending in fixed prices from 2000 to 2009 increased by only 1.5%, less than the average growth of 4% in OECD countries.

The national healthcare spending in Israel was also relatively low in 2009, totaling 79% of the GDP, compared to a 9.6% average in OECD countries. The highest rates were in the US (17.4%), Holland (12%) and France (11.8%).

And who funds healthcare spending in Israel? According to the report, only 58% of healthcare spending in 2009 was financed by the State – lower than the OECD average of 72% that year.

Afgelopen week had Trouw een artikel over de prenatale zorg in Israel onder de bijzonder suggestieve titel: "Het uitverkoren volk moet perfect zijn". Het artikel gaat over de ervaringen van een vrouw, die vindt dat er te overdreven over de gezondheid van haar foetus wordt gewaakt, en haar tests worden opgedrongen. Een artikel over de prenatale zorg in verschillende landen en de onderlinge verschillen zou interessant zijn, en zoiets kan inderdaad iets onthullen over een land, cultuur, politiek, organisatiegraad en prioriteiten die het stelt. Dit artikel gaat echter slechts over de specifieke ervaringen van een vrouw, die zij via enkele uitspraken van anderen koppelt aan het Joodse verleden en uiteraard de Holocaust. We komen niks te weten over de zorg in Israel in het algemeen, het aantal babysterftes in vergelijking met andere landen (bijzonder weinig, in tegenstelling tot Nederland), de ervaringen en tevredenheid van Israelische vrouwen (de schrijfster geeft toe slechts de menu kaart in het Hebreeuws te kunnen lezen dus gebrekkige communicatie kan aan haar negatieve gevoel hebben bijgedragen), de ervaringen en tevredenheid van Arabische vrouwen in Israel, etc. etc.

Het doel van het artikel lijkt dan ook niet te zijn om mensen te informeren maar slechts om een sentiment over te brengen, en daarmee goedkoop te scoren. In feite is het maar een saai relaas, de details over de bevalling van een ander zijn nou eenmaal niet per sé interessant. Dus daarom gooit ze er af en toe een suggestieve opmerking tussendoor, en suggereert daarbij dat dingen in Nederland beter geregeld zijn want hier 'doen ze niet zo moeilijk' en mag je nog lekker pijn lijden bij de bevalling. Als je door deze opmerkingen heen leest en puur naar de feiten kijkt, doemt echter een beeld op van een zeer goed georganiseerde zorg, waarin er alles aan wordt gedaan om te zorgen dat je kind gezond is. En dat lijkt me een goede zaak, waar we wellicht een voorbeeld aan kunnen nemen. Het artikel heeft veel reacties en emoties opgeroepen en ik heb verschillende verhalen gelezen van vrouwen die zeggen blij te zijn met het Israelische systeem en de zorg die ze kregen. Ook Van Heusden heeft het tussen neus en lippen door over 'vriendinnen in Nederland' die 'jaloers verzuchtten dat het bij mij ten minste wel allemaal goed geregeld was.' Waarop ze vervolgt dat ook Israel natuurlijk niet kan garanderen dat je kind gezond is, want een 100% garantie bestaat niet.

Verwijzingen naar de Holocaust en het Joodse volk doen het altijd goed. Niks wat er in Israel gebeurt of wordt gezegd ontkomt aan de koppeling met Jodendom, Bijbel en Holocaust. Ook Van Heusden maakt gretig gebruik van deze clichés om haar saaie relaas op te leuken.
Zo vertelt een vrouw haar dat ze een andere gynaecoloog opzocht omdat de hare wou dat ze abortus pleegde omdat er een afwijking was geconstateerd:

"Wat is dat hier in dit land?", verzuchtte ik. "Het Joodse volk is het uitverkoren volk", antwoordde ze. "En dat moet perfect zijn."

Dit is een valse suggestie, die meermaals terugkomt. Er worden in Nederland meer abortussen gepleegd dan in Israel en het is niet waar dat bij afwijkingen vrouwen onder druk worden gezet om het maar weg te laten halen. Net als in Nederland is er een zorgvuldige procedure. Dat zou overigens ook in tegenspraak zijn met de wens van de Israelische maatschappij naar veel kinderen, die in het artikel ook flink wordt aangedikt, maar consistentie is nou eenmaal niet de sterkste kant van Israel bashers:

Kinderen moeten niet alleen perfect zijn: wat alles nog meer beladen maakt, is de Israëlische vraag naar véél kinderen. De staat promoot het krijgen van kinderen, onder meer met een flinke kinderbijslag.

Dat laatste klopt, maar komt vooral omdat ultra-orthodoxe partijen onevenredig veel invloed hebben op de politiek en onmisbaar zijn in bijna iedere coalitie. In ruil voor steun aan het regeringsbeleid bedingen zij steun voor de religieuze scholen, veel kinderbijslag en vrijstelling om te werken of in het leger te dienen. Overigens profiteren Arabische vrouwen hiervan evenzeer als Joodse, en onder Arabieren is het geboortecijfer hoger dan onder de seculiere Joden. Het citaat dat men bewust op veel kinderen aanstuurt om een Joodse meerderheid te kunnen behouden, is dan ook in tegenspraak met het beleid dat ook Arabieren met veel kinderen bevoordeelt.

Vervolgens wordt het hoge kindercijfer in Israel gelinkt aan de Holocaust:

Juist het feit dat Israël permanent conflictgebied is, werkt volgens de Israëlische professor David Passig mee aan het hoge geboortecijfer in Israël. "Het is bekend dat overal in de wereld meer kinderen worden geboren na een oorlog. Hier komen en gaan de oorlogen." Maar de futuroloog aan de Bar Ilan universiteit ziet de echte oorzaak ergens anders: de Holocaust. "We zijn nog nauwelijks hersteld van die ramp. De staat Israël leeft in angst en met een overlevingsimpuls; daarom krijgen we meer kinderen."

Die angst wordt bezworen met heel veel controles. Daarbij geholpen, zegt Passig, door het feit dat in de Joodse religie prenatale tests niet ter discussie staan.

Het zou goed kunnen dat de vele rampen die het Joodse volk heeft meegemaakt en de oorlogen tegen Israel invloed hebben op de houding tegenover kinderen. Daar komt bij dat Israel bij haar ontstaan zo'n 700.000 inwoners had, en in korte tijd meer dan een miljoen vluchtelingen uit vooral de Arabische staten maar ook overlevenden van de Holocaust uit Europa opving en werk en huisvesting voor hen moest verzorgen, zich ondertussen verwerend tegen de Arabische dreigingen en aanvallen. Het gaat hierbij niet zozeer om het bezweren van (irreële) angsten, maar om naakt overleven. De Israelische maatschappij is in meer opzichten directer gericht op overleven dan de Nederlandse. Mensen werken er harder, iedereen moet in het leger (behalve Arabieren en ultra-orthodoxen, wat in toenemende mate een probleem is omdat beide groepen groeien). Mensen zijn inventief en ondernemend, vreemden helpen elkaar op straat en bemoeien zich met elkaar, en er wordt minder aandacht geschonken aan 'luxe' zaken als opgeruimde straten en parken.

Een artikel waarin zonder negatieve bijbedoeling of ondertoon serieus onderzocht wordt hoe de Holocaust doorwerkt in het moderne Israel zou interessant kunnen zijn, al blijft het oppassen voor te makkelijke clichés. Een artikel dat de manier waarop de gezondheidszorg in Israel geregeld is vergelijkt met een aantal andere landen zou ook leerzaam zijn. Een onderzoek waarin de zuigelingenzorg en regelingen rond zwangerschap en kinderen in een aantal landen in verband wordt gebracht met de houding tegenover kinderen in de daar dominante religie(s) en cultuur kan ook interessant zijn. Een artikel waarin een vrouw haar eigen bepaald niet enerverende ervaringen ophangt aan de meest afgekloven clichés over dat land ('een kind krijgen in Israel is als een militaire operatie') met als conclusie dat het allemaal weer eens niet deugt in Israel, is niet alleen vreselijk saai maar ook een krant als Trouw onwaardig. Men lijkt werkelijk alles aan te grijpen om maar weer een negatief getint verhaal over Israel te kunnen brengen, want zulke verhalen doen het goed tegenwoordig. De onsmakelijke kop met subtiele verwijzing naar het antisemitische idee dat de Joden zichzelf superieur achten aan niet-Joden moet de verder nietszeggende inhoud van het artikel verbloemen. Proficiat Trouw, jullie glijden steeds meer af naar het niveau van een boulevardblad.

Het is overigens niet de eerste keer dat dit thema wordt gebruikt om Israel en het Jodendom in een kwaad daglicht te stellen. Vandaag twee jaar geleden had Nova een uitzending met dezelfde teneur, met daarin vooral nadruk op het feit dat onvruchtbare vrouwen in Israel zoveel IVF behandelingen vergoed krijgen en tot op relatief hoge leeftijd. Schandalig natuurlijk, en het bewijs dat men er verderfelijke ideeën over niet-Joden op nahoudt, en die met al die kunstmatig verkregen kinderen wil gaan belagen. Misschien zouden we eens op kunnen houden met dit soort onzin en gewoon kunnen constateren dat men in Israel soms andere keuzes en afwegingen maakt en zaken anders regelt dan bij ons? Soms beter, soms slechter, maar soms vooral ook anders.

Aandacht voor bespuugd Israëlisch meisje is hypocriet

Verschillende mensen wijzen erop dat de aandacht voor het achtjarige meisje dat in Beith Shemesh werd bespuugd door ultra orthodoxe Joden in schril contrast staat met de aandacht voor allerlei andere kleine meisjes die onrecht wordt aangedaan. Zoals Sahar uit Afghanistan, op haar dertiende uitgehuwelijkt en vervolgens verkracht en mishandeld door haar nieuwe familie. Of een dertienjarig Joods meisje uit Brussel dat in elkaar is geslagen door Marokaanse leeftijdgenoten omdat ze Joods is. En zo zijn er nog wel meer voorbeelden te vinden.

Het is waar, de media springen er bovenop wanneer het Israel betreft en de daders orthodoxe Joden zijn, terwijl men vaak een stuk terughoudener is wat betreft moslims, want die worden al zo gestigmatiseerd. Dat dat voor orthodoxe Joden minstens evenzeer geldt doet blijkbaar niet ter zake. De religieuze dwang en intolerantie in Israel roept bij mij echter ook meer verontwaardiging op dan wanneer hetzelfde in Iran zou gebeuren, waar ik niet veel anders verwacht. Israel is democratisch, westers, vrij, daar mogen de baardmannen de macht niet krijgen. In Iran hebben ze die al lang. Het Afghaanse meisje roept bij mij wel walging op, en een gevoel van machteloosheid, want alle westerse bemoeienis en strijd tegen de Taliban hebben dit soort praktijken dus niet kunnen tegenhouden. Je leest en hoort overigens wel vaker over de benarde positie van vrouwen in Afganistan, en de vraag is telkens weer wat je daar als Westers land aan moet of kunt doen. Niet veel, zeggen velen dan, een land met dergelijke middeleeuwse praktijken verander je niet van buitenaf. Bij Israel is de teneur anders: 'zie je wel, ze zijn toch niet beter dan de Arabieren ook al beweren ze altijd van wel, ook in 'democratisch' Israel zijn de baardmannen aan de macht. En dan maar klagen over Hamas.' Wat betreft Israel krijgt alles direct een ideologische lading en wordt tegen Israel gebruikt. De vraag is niet hoe zoiets kan en wat ertegen gedaan kan worden.

Dit geldt ook voor de demonstratie waarbij de ultra orthodoxen met Jodensterren op liepen. Walgelijk, maar Hajo Meyer, voorzitter van Een Ander Joods Geluid, vergelijkt Israel ook met de nazi's en Thomas von der Dunk doet dat ook. En in Trouw werd onlangs de holocaust er weer eens met de haren bijgesleept in een suggestief artikel over de Israelische prenatale zorg. Men wil perfecte babies want het uitverkoren volk moet perfect zijn, aldus het artikel, en dit werd vervolgens aan de holocaust gekoppeld. Die vergelijkingen zijn allemaal even walgelijk en goedkoop, bedoeld om sentimenten op te roepen en een simpel goed-fout en dader-slachtoffer beeld te schetsen. Jammer dat onze media wel veel aandacht hebben voor het misbruik van de holocaust door ultra orthodoxe Joden maar er zelf ondertussen op een iets subtielere manier ook aan meedoen.

We moeten ultraorthodoxe joden niet verwarren met gewone orthodoxe joden. De ultra's vormen een aparte categorie in Israël - sommigen ontkennen zelfs het bestaansrecht van de staat Israël.

In New York kan de Iraanse president Mahmoud Ahmadinedjad geregeld rekenen op een feestelijke ontvangst door een aparte groep ultra's. Ze zijn het eens met Ahmadinedjad: Israël moet van de kaart worden geveegd. Het levert altijd sexy plaatjes op: Ahmadinedjad lachend naast een ultraorthodoxe jood.

Voor dit soort religieuze fanaten staat niet het welzijn van joden en de joodse staat, maar hun religieuze fanatisme centraal. Het zijn gekken die denken dat het bestaan van de staat Israël de komst van de Messias verhindert.

Mishandeld
Die ultra's wisten in de voorbije dagen de aandacht van de wereld op zich te vestigen door het achtjarige meisje Naama te bespugen. Naama kleedt zich in hun ogen niet zedelijk. Het Israëlische meisje uit Beit Sjemesj trok ontzettend veel aandacht, in en buiten Israël. In Israël gingen duizenden de straat op om het immorele en verwerpelijke gedrag van ultra's te veroordelen. Alle Europese media schonken aandacht aan Naama. Een vreemde zaak!

Rond dezelfde tijd maakte de BBC beelden openbaar van een Afghaans meisje dat zwaar was mishandeld door de familie van haar man. Rond haar veertiende - volgens de Afghaanse media rond haar dertiende - werd het Afghaanse meisje Sahar Gul uitgehuwelijkt aan een dertigjarige man. Na een tijdje vroeg de familie van haar man Sahar om zich te gaan prostitueren. Ze weigerde.

Sahar werd daarom gedurende zes maanden opgesloten in een kelder, seksueel misbruikt, uitgehongerd en gefolterd. Ze hebben stukken van haar lichaam afgesneden. Ze trokken haar nagels uit. Uiteindelijk werd zij bevrijd doordat een van haar familieleden een klacht had ingediend bij de politie.

Onteerd
Ik durf hier te beweren dat als er geen westerlingen in Afghanistan zouden zijn, de Afghaanse politie geen actie had ondernomen om haar te bevrijden. Dan zou het in hun ogen een familiezaak zijn geweest.

Ziet u het verschil tussen de zaken, tussen Naama en Sahar?

Naar aanleiding van de berichten rond Naama riep zelfs Shimon Peres, de president van Israël, de burgers op om mee te doen aan de demonstraties en het protest tegen de ultra's: 'Iedereen, religieuzen, seculieren, conservatieven, moet het karakter van de staat Israël verdedigen tegen een minderheid die onze nationale solidariteit probeert kapot te maken.'

Duizenden woedende Israëlische burgers gingen de straat op. De ultra's zijn totaal onteerd, door hun eigen schuld. En laten we de Europese media niet vergeten.

O, wat waren ze blij. O, wat deden ze vrolijk mee aan de strijd tegen de ultra's. Eindelijk krijgen we, vanuit het perspectief van de linkse Europese media, te zien dat ook joodse religieuze figuren zeer slechte mensen zijn.

Dus, wat is de boodschap? Relativeer je kritiek op fundamentalistische moslims!

Hetze
En de zaak-Sahar? Het duurde een paar dagen totdat het filmpje over Sahar van de Perzische afdeling van BBC via de Engelstalige afdeling mocht worden verspreid. Ik had zelf de beelden al gezien. De overige Europese media waren terughoudend.

En de antifascistische krant van Nederland, NRC Handelsblad? De krant van rechtsstaat en mensenrechten? O nee, weer moslims! We moeten niet meedoen aan de hetze van Geert Wilders tegen de moslims, dachten ze in de linkse media.

Wilders heeft niets met Sahar te maken. De Afghaanse cultuur, de islamitische cultuur, daar gaat het om.

Voor Sahar ging geen enkele Afghaan de straat op. Mishandelen, vrouwen? Dat gebeurt dagelijkse binnen de kringen van stammen en families! Voor wie zouden ze moeten demonstreren? Wijselijk riep de Afghaanse president zijn burgers niet op om te demonstreren voor de rechten van Sahar en andere meisjes en vrouwen die in Afghanistan op wrede wijze worden behandeld.

Baardmannen
De president kon dat niet, omdat in het Afghaanse parlement achterlijkebaardmannen zitten, die weinig moeite hebben met vrouwenmishandeling. Je kunt ze uithuwelijken. De sharia verbiedt het niet. Al een tijdje waarschuwen internationale organisaties dat de situatie van vrouwen in Afghanistan buitengewoon ernstig is.

Voor Sahar doet niemand iets, opdat de dialoog met de islam en de goede interculturele sfeer niet in gevaar komen.

Het is hard maar waar: was die arme Sahar maar een joodse, trotse Israëlische geweest. Dan zou zij door haar president, haar volk en de linkse media in Europa worden beschermd. In dit geval konden de baardmannen niet verder gaan dan spugen.

De laatste weken is er opeens veel aandacht voor de religieuze spanningen in Israel, en lijkt een bom die al langer lag te smeulen tot uitbarsting gekomen. Het begon met een keurig gekleed achtjarig meisje wiens verhaal dat zij op straat werd bespuugd door ultra orthodoxen velen in Israel schokte. In de reportage die een Israelische televisieploeg maakte laat zo'n Jood weten het volkomen terecht te vinden dat dit gebeurt, omdat iedereen zich aan de wetten van de Torah moet houden. Ook voorspelt hij dat Israel een theocratie zal worden waar deze wetten voor iedereen zullen gelden.

Hierop volgde een demonstratie van tienduizenden tegen de zogenaamde 'religieuze dwang' en een actie tegen de gescheiden buslijnen en daarop volgde een demonstratie van enkele duizenden (of misschien zelfs minder) haredim die zichzelf met de Joden in de 2e Wereldoorlog vergeleken en daarom gele Jodensterren hadden opgespeld. Ze zouden net zozeer vervolgd worden als de Joden toentertijd. Dit werd uiteraard alom veroordeeld als smakeloos en grievend, en ook binnen de haredische gemeenschap zijn er velen die protesteren tegen de religieuze intolerantie.

Het blijft (voor mij althans) vooralsnog onduidelijk hoe groot de groep haredim is die er zo over denkt als de agressieve man in het filmpje van de Israelische TV en de demonstranten met Jodensterren, maar duidelijk is wel dat het niet om een klein groepje extremisten gaat. Overal duiken voorbeelden op. Van de posters in Jeruzalem van vrouwen die zo systematisch worden vernield dat de meeste bedrijven zijn gestopt met het afbeelden van vrouwen in reclames in de publieke ruimte, tot de vele buslijnen (niet alleen van en naar haredi wijken) waar vrouwen worden lastig gevallen als ze niet achterin gaan zitten, tot verhalen van mensen die netjes gekleed in haredi wijken door snotjongens werden belaagd, en christenen in de oude stad van Jeruzalem die al jaren last hebben van spugende ultra orthodoxen. Het gaat hier vaak om praktijken die al jarenlang gaande zijn, en blijkbaar min of meer werden gedoogd en geduld door de machthebbers en de leiders van de lokale haredim gemeenschap. Ik word er eerlijk gezegd behoorlijk onpasselijk van en vind eigenlijk dat de seculieren zich zeer tolerant en terughoudend opstellen tegenover mensen die veelal op hun kosten leven en studeren, door hun kinderen worden beschermd maar zelf geen goed woord over hebben voor iedereen die niet net zo rigide is in het geloof als zij. Of, zoals een ultra orthodoxe rabbijn het zelf zegt in de Haaretz:

I don't believe anyone has to pay for my beliefs. It's not ethical that the secular public finances yeshiva students and the high birth rate among the ultra-Orthodox. There is nothing more infuriating to secular Israelis than to be spit in the face after they've given the ultra-Orthodox a generous sum of money. The ultra-Orthodox oppose the values of a secular society Zionism, creativity, army conscription, sexual equality and more. However, they have no qualms about demanding and receiving money from this society, thereby intensifying public animosity toward them.
Let's be honest with ourselves. There is no reason the secular public should finance those who show contempt for its values. The solution I propose will benefit religion more than the state. I don't want to be part of a society that uses coercion. I don't want to be part of a society in which there is incitement to racism, and I don't want to be part of an ungrateful religious society.

. The time has come to say "enough": enough to the religious parties; enough to their disgraceful self-centered preoccupation with budgets, as they ignore the rest of the country and the world; enough to the moral and aesthetic corruption of religion; enough to forcing laws down the throat of a public that does not believe in them.
To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr., I, too, have a dream: I have a dream that politics will be separated from religion; I have a dream that a secular child will study the Jewish sources out of love and not out of fear of the results reflected in the display window of the religious establishment; I have a dream of belonging to a moderate Haredi religious society with broad horizons, whose slogan is "Live and let live."

Hij is gelukkig niet de enige haredi die zich uitspreekt, en dat biedt hoop. Maar de haredim zullen hun privileges niet zonder slag of stoot opgeven, en de streng religieuze partijen hebben onevenredig veel invloed in de Israelische politiek, omdat ze bij bijna iedere regeringsvorming nodig blijken te zijn.

De haredim waren aanvankelijk fel gekant tegen de stichting van Israel, en zeker het Israel dat de seculiere zionisten voor ogen hadden. Er is toen, kort samengevat, een deal gesloten waarbij zij op een paar gebieden wel hun zin kregen zoals zaken rondom huwelijk en begrafenissen, en ook konden zij hun leven van full time studie voort zetten met steun van de staat. Vandaar dat je voor een burgerlijk huwelijk naar Cyprus moet en dat het orthodoxe Jodendom de enige officieel erkende variant is en alleen niet-Joden die bij een orthodoxe rabbijn zijn 'uitgekomen' als Jood worden erkend door de staat. Het zijn dit soort zaken die antizionisten vaak aangrijpen om erop te wijzen hoe religieus Israel is en dus haar aanspraak een moderne democratie te zijn niet waarmaakt. Waarna er in een moeite door op wordt gewezen dat zionisme en democratie niet samengaan, omdat het zionisme uit gaat van de superioriteit en uitverkorenheid van het Joodse volk. Het is een omkering van zaken, want juist de ultra orthodoxen waren (en zijn dat voor een groot deel nog steeds) antizionistisch. Sommigen spreken zich geregeld tegen Israel uit en ook op de demonstratie in Jeruzalem waar zij zich in kampkleding hulden waren borden te zien waar zionisme met racisme wordt gelijkgesteld. En juist zij drukken een religieus stempel op Israel en tornen aan haar democratische uitgangspunten zoals de gelijkheid tussen de seksen en de scheiding van religie en staat.

Ook zaken als dat er op sabbath geen openbaar vervoer rijdt en er met Pesach geen gewoon brood in de winkels ligt doen mij wat vreemd aan voor een modern en seculier land. Voor Joden, ook de meerderheid die zich seculier noemt, hoort religie echter meer bij het dagelijks leven dan voor ons. Het is voor hen vaak een onderdeel en bron van hun identiteit en geschiedenis. Mede door de religie en de vele aparte gebruiken zijn de Joden in de diaspora altijd herkenbaar gebleven en niet weg geassimileerd. En misschien wel daarom is er in Israel behoorlijk veel begrip voor de ultra orthodoxen en hun wensen.

De zionisten braken met de Joodse traditie en waren met hun revolutionaire ideeën een bedreiging voor het Joodse establishment. Door de geschiedenis en het extreme antisemitisme kregen zij toch veel aanhang, aanvankelijk vooral uit Oost Europa waar de Joden er slechter aan toe waren, maar vanwege de nazi's ook uit West Europa. De ultra orthodoxe Joden in Jeruzalem keken met scepsis naar de zionisten en stonden er passief naar te kijken toen die in 1948 voor het behoud van de oude stad vochten. Deze passieve houding en het gebrek aan steun voor de strijders van de Haganah heeft zeker bijgedragen aan het verlies van de oude stad. Jordanië heeft de Joodse wijk grotendeels verwoest, inclusief de synagoges, en stenen uit de begraafplaats op de Olijfberg zijn gebruikt om wegen te plaveien.

Ondanks alle privileges van de haredim keren zij zich geregeld tegen de staat, en sommigen roepen openlijk om de stichting van een Joodse theocratie in plaats van het grotendeels seculiere Israel. Door hun agressieve houding tegenover seculiere Israeli's en het stempel dat zij op de staat drukken spelen zij de antizionisten in de kaart en dragen bij aan hun campagne tegen Israel. Wat sommigen niet beseffen is dat juist zij, als zeer herkenbare Joden, het zonder Israel zwaar te verduren zullen krijgen en hun levensstijl buiten Israel nauwelijks mogelijk is. Het is voor het voortbestaan van Israel (en daarmee ook hun eigen toekomst) van groot belang dat de privileges van de ultra orthodoxen worden afgebouwd waaronder de hoge subsidies op het krijgen van veel kinderen, en er een realistischer verdeling komt van lusten en lasten.

Mediaverslaggeving over Jenin: hoe journalistiek de mist in ging

Wat is er blijven hangen bij de gemiddelde burger wat betreft Jenin? Dat Israel het vluchtelingenkamp daar met de grond gelijk maakte en de Palestijnen bij bosjes de dood in werden gejaagd. De werkelijke toedracht geldt als ‘zionistische propaganda’, afkomstig van de oppermachtige zionistische lobby. Toch is die toedracht zelfs door de VN en Human Rights Watch bevestigd. Hieronder een gedetallieerd verslag waarbij duidelijk wordt dat Israel er juist alles aan deed om onschuldige slachtoffers te voorkomen.

Tijdens de tweede Intifada is dit kamp namelijk uitgegroeid tot een uitvalsbasis voor terroristische activiteiten. Vanuit Jenin worden aan de lopende band zelfmoordaanslagen georganiseerd, door verschillende terroristische organisaties (onder meer: de Islamitische Jihad, de Al-Aqsa Martelaren Brigade, het Nationaal en Islamitisch Front, Hamas…). Van de zestig zelfmoordterroristen, zijn er 23 uit Jenin afkomstig.

Operation Defensive Shield

De directe aanleiding tot de operatie is een zelfmoordaanslag door Hamas op 27 maart 2002 in het Park Hotel in Netanya. Tijdens de viering van de Sederavond (=het Joodse paasfeest) worden negenentwintig gasten gedood en honderdveertig gewond. Op 29 maart wordt de militaire operatie aangekondigd. Op 2 april trekt een duizendtal Israëlische soldaten het kamp binnen. De burgerbevolking wordt herhaaldelijk opgeroepen om het kamp te verlaten. Hoeveel mensen aan deze oproep gevolg geven, weet niemand. Volgens schattingen achteraf zouden tussen de dertienhonderd en vierduizend mensen in het kamp gebleven zijn tijdens de militaire actie. Snel wordt duidelijk dat in bijna alle huizen valstrikken met explosieven aangebracht zijn. Later verklaart Tabaat Mardawi (Islamic Jihad) dat er tussen de duizend en tweeduizend bommen en booby traps aangebracht werden in huizen, verspreid over het hele kamp. Daardoor wordt het voor het leger zeer moeilijk en gevaarlijk om de terroristen te pakken te krijgen. Toch besluit de legerleiding om het kamp niet te bombarderen vanuit de lucht om onschuldige slachtoffers te vermijden. Wel worden er bulldozers ingezet om de explosieven onschadelijk te maken. Alleen al in de hoofdstraat van het kamp, over een afstand van 1,2 kilometer, worden honderdvierentwintig bommen gedetoneerd door de bulldozers.

Onlangs te horen in De Vloek van Osama van Rudy Vranckx op één: “Op 1 april [2002, nvdr.] hadden ook de moslims hun eigen Ground Zero, Israël bezette en vernietigde het Palestijnse vluchtelingenkamp Jenin” (Vranckx, aflevering 1 minuut 39). Geef toe: deze uitspraak doet vermoeden dat er honderden of zelfs duizenden onschuldige doden vielen. Over Jenin is ondertussen al heel veel gezegd en geschreven. Het is uitgegroeid tot een echte ‘case’ in de journalistiek. De jonge onderzoekster, Ciara Goossens, hield in een paper de verslaggeving over Jenin tegen het licht van de journalistieke deontologie. Wij brengen u het echte verhaal van de echte feiten en de vele journalistieke flaters die tot op vandaag in de berichtgeving hierover sluipen.

Jenin is een Palestijnse stad met naar schatting vijfendertigduizend inwoners. De stad ligt op de noordelijke kant van de Westbank. Aan de rand van de stad bevindt zich een vluchtelingenkamp. In 1995 is Jenin de eerste stad die door Israël aan de Palestijnse autoriteit wordt overgedragen, in uitvoering van de Oslo-akkoorden (1993). In het vluchtelingenkamp wonen naar schatting dertienduizend inwoners. De meesten zijn zich vanuit Jordanië daar komen vestigen, na de oprichting van de Palestijnse Autoriteit (1994).

Maart 2002, de tweede intifada zaait dood en vernieling in Israël. De vloedgolf van bloedige aanslagen bereikt een triest hoogtepunt met meer dan honderd Israëlische burgerslachtoffers. De Israëlische regering besluit om te reageren. Het IDF (Israel Defence Force) krijgt de opdracht om het terreurnetwerk in Judea en Samaria aan te pakken. Operation Defensive Shield wordt gelanceerd. Eén van de doelwitten is het vluchtelingenkamp in Jenin. Tijdens de tweede Intifada is dit kamp namelijk uitgegroeid tot een uitvalsbasis voor terroristische activiteiten. Vanuit Jenin worden aan de lopende band zelfmoordaanslagen georganiseerd, door verschillende terroristische organisaties (onder meer: de Islamitische Jihad, de Al-Aqsa Martelaren Brigade, het Nationaal en Islamitisch Front, Hamas…). Van de zestig zelfmoordterroristen, zijn er 23 uit Jenin afkomstig.

Massagraven

Tijdens het militaire optreden wordt de stad en het vluchtelingenkamp voor alle buitenstaanders afgesloten. Daardoor zijn er geen neutrale waarnemers en krijgt de Palestijnse propagandamachine vrij spel. Woordvoerders van de Palestijnse Autoriteit en van de PLO hebben het over de volledige vernietiging van het kamp, over een slachtpartij met meer dan vijfhonderd burgerslachtoffers, over massagraven, die de Israëlische soldaten zouden gegraven hebben. De pers neemt de informatie gretig over, zowel de audiovisuele- als de geschreven pers.

Enige tijd later komt de waarheid aan het licht, dankzij een onderzoek van de VN. In werkelijkheid zijn er aan Palestijnse kant tweeënvijftig dodelijke slachtoffers. Human Rights Watch telt daarvan zevenentwintig strijders, tweeëntwintig burgerdoden en drie niet te identificeren dodelijke slachtoffers. Door de hevige gevechten vallen aan Israëlische kant drieëntwintig doden en vijfenzeventig gewonden.

Maar de internationale pers neemt de foutieve berichtgeving van de Palestijnen klakkeloos over. Feiten worden niet nagetrokken: nochtans een elementaire journalistieke regel. Sensationele getuigenissen van overlevenden zijn zeer gegeerd. Een bizar verhaal haalt probleemloos de pers: een zekere Abu Ali vertelt dat de lichamen van zijn negen kinderen onder het puin van het vluchtelingenkamp liggen en dat hij de lucht van hun lijkjes geroken heeft. Later blijkt dat dit verhaal helemaal verzonnen is. Het lichaam van een dode vrouw wordt op CNN herhaaldelijk getoond als een slachtoffer van het Israëlische leger. In realiteit is ze overleden ten gevolge van een hartaanval: dat wordt later duidelijk. The Daily Telegraph bloklettert ongestoord dat honderden slachtoffers begraven zijn door bulldozers in massagraven.

In de berichtgeving over de Israëlische inval in Jenin zijn feiten en opiniestukken in elkaar verweven. Ook dat is in tegenspraak met de regels van de journalistiek. Zo is er volgens The London Evening Standard “sprake van een massamoord en van genocide, die men in de doofpot probeert te stoppen”. The Guardian: “de Israëlische acties in Jenin zijn net zo weerzinwekkend als de aanslagen van Osama bin Laden op 11 september in Amerika”. Nu weten we ook waar Rudi Vranckx de mosterd haalt.

Een andere journalistieke regel stelt dat alle kanten van een probleem aan bod moeten komen. Maar in de verslaggeving over Jenin komt alle informatie van de Palestijnse kant. Dit is een oud zeer, dat nog altijd zeer hardnekkig voortleeft. Wie hierop wijst, krijgt steevast het verwijt tot de “Joodse/Israëlische lobby” te behoren.

Ook de woordkeuze van de journalisten kan de inhoud van de boodschap bepalen. Een recent NOS artikel over Jenin spreekt over ‘verzetsstrijders’ in Jenin. De journalist gebruikt het woord ‘verzet’ om de terreur vanuit Jenin te omschrijven, of te verzwijgen? Verzet tegen een bezettingsleger of tegen een overheerser is een legitieme daad. Alleen is het zo dat het Israëlisch leger in 2002 tot aan de inval niet aanwezig was in Jenin, terwijl de terreurcellen in Jenin hun aanslagen in de Israëlische steden aan het uitvoeren waren. Een man die aanslagen beraamd heeft op onschuldige burgers, wordt door de NOS- journalist een verzetstrijder genoemd. Zou iemand in het NOS journaal de Noorse moordenaar Anders Breivik ook een verzetstrijder durven noemen? Het is de taak van een kritische journalist om verbloemende taal te onthullen. Wat de nazi’sEndlösung noemden, was ook helemaal iets anders dan de neutrale term ‘definitieve oplossing’ suggereert. Een journalist moet zich baseren op het onderzoek van de feiten en hij mag niet aarzelen om ze op een correcte manier te benoemen.

De invloed van de media

Overigens is het voor de journalist ook niet gemakkelijk om in moeilijke omstandigheden grondig te werken. Het publiek verwacht onmiddellijke en eenduidige informatie, bij voorkeur met rechtstreekse en liefst spectaculaire beelden ter plaatse. Veel tijd of middelen om alles met de nodige kritische zin te onderzoeken of te nuanceren is er niet. Daardoor blijven de deontologische regels vaak achterwege.

En toch heeft de journalist, ook in het geval van Jenin, een grote verantwoordelijkheid. Eens de (foutieve) berichten over de massamoorden de wereld zijn ingestuurd, leiden die een eigen leven. Onmiddellijk na het nieuws over het (vermeende) bloedbad in Jenin worden in verschillende Europese steden massale manifestaties tegen Israël georganiseerd. Sommige lopen uit de hand. Ook in Antwerpen is dit het geval: relschoppers laten in april 2002 een spoor van vernieling achter in de Scheldestad. Bovendien blijft de misleidende informatie heel vaak hangen, ook al worden later rechtzettingen geplaatst.

Veel internationale kranten hebben hun berichtgeving over Jenin enkele weken later aangepast. Bij Rudi Vranckx van de VRT lijkt dat niet het geval te zijn. Erger nog, Vranckx manipuleert in zijn reportage ook bewust de tijdslijn van de gebeurtenissen, waarbij actie en reactie worden omgewisseld. In de bewuste reportage zegt hij: “Na 11 september maakte Israël van de gelegenheid gebruik om het vredesproces op een laag pitje te zetten en Arafat in het kamp van de terroristen te duwen”. “Maar”, aldus Vranckx, “ook Palestijnse extremisten sloegen toe. Begin 2002 vielen bij een eindeloze reeks aanslagen in Israël zevenennegentig doden en honderden gewonden”.

Zo legt Rudy Vranckx, heel subtiel de schuld bij Israël. In werkelijkheid raken de vredesgesprekken pas NA de reeks bloedige aanslagen in een dal en niet voordien. Ehud Barak had in de zomer van 2000 in Taba de Palestijnen een verregaand aanbod gedaan (liefst 97% van de gebieden in ruil voor vrede en erkenning van Israëls grenzen). Het antwoord van Arafat was neen. In de plaats daarvan lanceerde hij een ongeziene terreurcampagne (= de tweede intifada). Vranckx gaat met zijn uitspraak wel heel kort door de bocht. Wat hij zegt, druist in tegen alle regels van de journalistiek. Hier is een journalist aan het werk die al te graag zijn eigen agenda aan de Vlaamse kijker wil opdringen. Bij de argeloze kijker slaagt hij daar zeker in. Hij is namelijk de VRT -specialist inzake het Midden-Oosten en hij komt er vaak als journalist op missie. Daardoor verwerft zijn woord een zeker gezag. En precies daarom wegen zijn journalistieke blunders bijzonder zwaar door.

"Hamas wil meer geweldloos verzet", zo kopten diverse media op internet en waarschijnlijk ook in hun papieren versies. Het bericht gaat verder met:

GAZA-STAD (ANP) De radicale Palestijnse beweging die de Gazastrook bestuurt, de Islamitische Verzetsbeweging Hamas, wil meer geweldloos verzet tegen Israël organiseren. Dit heeft een vooraanstaand lid van Hamas, Salah al-Bardawil, zaterdag gezegd.
Hamas heeft het meestal over de gewapende strijd, maar daar moet volgens Bardawil verandering in komen. Hij zei dat met verscheidene verzetsbewegingen is afgesproken meer aan ,,volksverzet" te doen door actie te voeren met protestmarsen, blokkades en burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid.
Voor Hamas is Israël een buitenlandse kolonie in Palestina die moet verdwijnen.

Het grote nieuws van het item is me niet geheel duidelijk. Hamas is voor de 'bevrijding' van het gehele land tussen de Jordaan en de zee, en daarvoor zijn alle middelen geoorloofd. Ik meen niet dat zij ooit een principieel bezwaar hebben gehad tegen ongewapende vormen van verzet. Integendeel, verschillende vormen kunnen elkaar prima aanvullen en versterken. Zo zijn bijvoorbeeld tijdens de Gaza oorlog (en al eerder) ongewapende vrouwen ingezet om huizen van Hamas strijders te beschermen, of ook de strijders zelf. Wanneer deze worden omringd door de vrouwen is het voor Israel immers onmogelijk om de strijders te treffen zonder een groot aantal burgerslachtoffers te maken. Ook kunnen via het zogenaamde volksverzet, dat overigens zelden geheel geweldloos is, mensen worden gerekruteerd voor het 'zwaardere' werk. Maar blijkbaar is alleen al de opmerking dat men naast het gewapende verzet ook volksverzet wil, voor tientallen nieuwsmediums vermeldenswaard. Overigens is de term 'verzet' in het geheel nogal misleidend. 'Verzet' gaat uit van een gerechtvaardigde strijd tegen onrecht en onderdrukking en heeft een positieve bijklank. Het doet al snel denken aan het verzet tegen de nazi's en verzet tegen andere wrede dictaturen. Waarom is niet gekozen voor het neutralere 'strijd'? Ook strijd kan zowel gewapend als ongewapend zijn, en gerechtvaardigd of niet.

In hoeverre de opmerkingen van Bardawil een verandering van strategie inhouden, blijkt onder andere uit de volgende opmerkingen van Hamas 'minister' Hamdan, naar aanleiding van acceptatie van het lidmaatschap van de PLO:

"Anyone who thinks Hamas has changed its positions and now accepts the PLO's defeatist political program is living in an illusion," Hamdan stressed. "Hamas cannot make the mistake of joining a process that has proved to be a failed one over the past 20 years."
Hamdan emphasized that Hamas remains committed to fulfilling the aspirations of Palestinians, "first and foremost the liberation of our lands from the sea to the river and achieving the right of return."

En dit zei Hamas leider Ismail Haniyeh bij het 24 jarig bestaan van de beweging een paar weken geleden:

"We affirm that armed resistance is our strategic option and the only way to liberate our land, from the [Mediterranean] sea to the River [Jordan]. God willing, Hamas will lead the people to the uprising until we liberate Palestine, all of Palestine."

We say today, explicitly, so it cannot be explained otherwise, that the armed resistance and the armed struggle are the path and the strategic choice for liberating the Palestinian land, from the [Mediterranean] sea to the [Jordan] river, and for the expulsion of the invaders and usurpers [Israel] from the blessed land of Palestine. The Hamas movement will lead Intifada after Intifada until we liberate Palestine all of Palestine, Allah willing. Allah Akbar and praise Allah. We say with transparency and in a clear manner, that Palestinian reconciliation and all sides must know this cannot come at the expense of [our] principles, at the expense of the resistance. These principles are absolute and cannot be disputed: Palestine all of Palestine is from the sea to the river. We won't relinquish one inch of the land of Palestine. The involvement of Hamas at any stage with the interim objective of liberation of [only] Gaza, the West Bank, or Jerusalem, does not replace its strategic view concerning Palestine and the land of Palestine.

En tijdens een dienst in de Gazastrook die op Hamas TV werd uitgezonden werden de volgende vredelievende woorden uitgesproken:

Preacher: "Our banner is 'There is no god but Allah,' our slogan is 'Allah Akbar,' our mantle is 'Death to the Jews and to America.' [...]
"The Prophet said: 'Judgment Day will not come until you fight the Jews you to the east of the river, and they to its west.
"'Then the stones and the trees will say: Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'
"They won't say: 'oh Westernized Muslim'
"They won't say: 'oh Muslim who does not know his religion'
"They will say: 'oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'
"Soon you will hear the stones and trees crying 'Allah Akbar,' saying: 'oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.'" [...]

Maar waarom waarde hechten aan dergelijke berichten als we ook kunnen geloven dat Hamas op een heel redelijke manier zich tegen een wrede bezetting wil verzetten? Deze berichten, en de vele andere van dezelfde teneur, halen de media bijna nooit. Ze worden doorgaans afgedaan als 'voor binnenlandse consumptie' en daarom niet van waarde. De uitspraken die Hamas leiders tegenover Westerse journalisten doen zouden daarentegen wel hun ware denkbeelden weergeven. Tsja.

De NRC gaat nog wat verder dan het ANP bericht dat door onder andere de regionale kranten en Spitsnieuws werd overgenomen. De hele riedel komt weer langs, de riedel die ik tijdens mijn onderzoek naar de berichtgeving van de NRC over het conflict ook al tientallen keren tegenkwam: Hamas bestaat niet uit lieve jongens, maar de beweging heeft zich sinds zij in Gaza aan de macht is gematigd. Zij ziet in, al zegt men dat niet openlijk, dat de vernietiging van Israel er niet inzit en is bereid zich neer te leggen bij de realiteit van het bestaan van Israel binnen de grenzen van voor 1967:

Volgens NRC-buitenlandredacteur Carolien Roelants is de bereidwilligheid van Hamas om de grenzen van 1967 te accepteren een "pragmatische" beslissing van de organisatie. Roelants:
"Je ziet dat Hamas in vergelijking met de afgelopen jaren steeds meer beweegt richting de acceptatie van de grenzen van 1967 en dus ook een twee staten-oplossing. Let wel, Meshal spreekt hier. Vergeet niet dat er ook anderen zijn die niet zo ver willen gaan als hun leider. Maar dit is wel een pragmatisering van de kant van Hamas."

Al in de jaren '90 stelden Hamas leiders een langdurig bestand voor, van tien of zelfs twintig jaar, en ook dat werd in het westen graag uitgelegd als teken van de matiging en vredeswil van Hamas. Dat zo'n bestand onder de voorwaarden die Hamas stelde neer zou komen op zelfmoord voor Israel, werd voor het gemak even vergeten, en ook dat meer dan duidelijk was dat dit bedoeld was om voldoende aan te sterken voor de grote strijd die in de toekomst zou plaatsvinden, waarbij het Hamas doel om het gehele land te veroveren alsnog zou worden gerealiseerd. Er is dus niks nieuws aan voorstellen om naast de gewelddadige strijd (lees: zelfmoordaanslagen en raketten op burgers) ook op andere manieren te werken aan het doel om het hele land in handen te krijgen. Men was zelfs bereid het geweld tijdelijk geheel stop te zetten als de voorwaarden maar gunstig genoeg waren (waarbij men natuurlijk wel wist dat Israel er toch niet mee akkoord zou gaan).

Ook het feit dat Hamas zich bij de PLO aan wil sluiten is geen teken van matiging, zoals uit bovenstaande citaat van Hamdan duidelijk blijkt. Het is eerder omgekeerd: dat de PLO Hamas (en de kleinere Islamitische Jihad) nu bereid is te accepteren, en volgens een leider van Islamitische Jihad zonder enige voorwaarden te stellen, is een teken dat zij radicaliseert. Dit zou ook blijken uit het dreigement van de PLO om de akkoorden met Israel op te zeggen. Dit is wat de journalist Khaled Abu Toameh erover zegt:

Hamas is joining the PLO not because it has changed, but out of a desire to make the Fatah-dominated organization stick to its true mission: the liberation of Palestine from Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea in other words, all the land that is currently Israel and to achieve the "right of return" for Palestinian refugees to their original villages and homes inside Israel.

Er zijn verschillende strategische redenen te verzinnen voor de toenadering tussen Fatah en Hamas, die overigens nog niet erg vlotjes verloopt, en de toetreding van Hamas tot de PLO. Hamas' basis in Syrië is in gevaar (voor zover die nog bestaat), de relatie met Egypte is ondertussen juist verbeterd waardoor men makkelijker wapens de Gazastrook binnen kan smokkelen. Door de Shalit deal is het aanzien van Hamas in de Palestijnse samenleving vergroot wat er wellicht toe leidde dat de PLO een Hamas lidmaatschap niet langer kon weigeren. Hoe dit ook zij, en wat er van de 'eenheid' tussen Hamas en Fatah ook moge komen, van matiging is geen sprake.

Een paar dagen geleden stond in allerlei kranten dat Hamas zich nu meer op het niet gewelddadige verzet wou richten, en de NRC kwam vorige week weer met de oude riedel dat Hamas nu pragmatisch was geworden en bereid zou zijn de pre-1967 ‘grenzen’ te accepteren. Dit soort berichten wordt meestal al snel weersproken door de nieuwste toespraak van Haniyeh of Mesjaal of uitspraken van andere Hamas woordvoerders die er niet om liegen. Die halen vervolgens natuurlijk niet de pers.

At a ceremony marking the 24th anniversary of the founding of Hamas, Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip Ismail Haniyeh said that Hamas may work for the "interim objective of liberation of Gaza, the West Bank, or Jerusalem," but that this "interim objective" and "reconciliation" with Fatah will not change Hamas' long-term "strategic" goal of eliminating all of Israel:

"The armed resistance and the armed struggle are the path and the strategic choice for liberating the Palestinian land, from the [Mediterranean] sea to the [Jordan] river, and for the expulsion of the invaders and usurpers [Israel]... We won't relinquish one inch of the land of Palestine."

In his speech, Haniyeh also promised that Hamas will "lead Intifada after Intifada until we liberate Palestine - all of Palestine, Allah willing. Allah Akbar and praise Allah."

Two days later, contradicting Haniyeh's statements, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said that Hamas leader abroad Khaled Mashaal had agreed that:

- "There will be no military resistance."

- "The permanent solution is on the '67 borders."

According to Abbas, Hamas agrees to a permanent solution on the '67 borders. However, Haniyeh said that Hamas agrees to a temporary solution on the '67 borders as a first stage only.

For many years, the PLO promoted a "stages plan" that would first create a Palestinian state on the 1949 - 1967 armistice lines, and then work from that position to destroy Israel.

Senior Fatah official Abbas Zaki recently stated that this remains the goal for Fatah as well, but that "you can't say it to the world. You can say it to yourself."

Reuters, Meulenbelt en anti-Israel propaganda

Sommige mensen vonden dat ik in mijn vorige artikelen wel erg veel aandacht besteedde aan Anja Meulenbelt, met altijd maar hetzelfde verhaal dat niks wat Israel doet deugt en de Palestijnen alleen maar onschuldige slachtoffers zijn. Ik wilde laten zien hoe propagandistisch haar blogs zijn; daar bedoel ik mee het op een professionele manier schrijven en mensen hun emoties manipuleren met het doel je lezers een bepaalde kant op te duwen. Daarbij laat ze doelbewust bepaalde informatie weg en vergroot andere dingen uit. Maar er zijn meer manieren om dit te doen en uit een onlangs gepubliceerd onderzoek naar Reuters blijkt hoe effectief dit is.

Als je niet in de pro-Israel scene zit is dit onderzoek je waarschijnlijk ontgaan, want de normale media besteedden er geen aandacht aan, zoals eerdere onderzoeken naar de BBC, de NOS en de NRC ook zijn genegeerd.
Dit keer werden niet alleen artikelen onderzocht op onjuistheden of gekleurde informatie, maar werd ook het directe effect van het lezen van die artikelen op mensen hun houding tegenover beide partijen in het conflict gemeten. Het bleek dat mensen na het lezen van de Reuters artikelen significant negatiever gingen denken over Israel. Dit word veroorzaakt door het gebruik van bepaalde propagandatechnieken.

Across the articles, over 1,100 occurrences of propaganda, fallacies and handbook violations in 41 categories were identified and classified.

In the second part of the study, a group of thirty-three university students were surveyed, before and after reading the articles, to assess their attitudes and motivation to support one or the other belligerent parties in the Middle East conflict, i.e., the Palestinians/Arabs or the Israelis. The study found that on average, subject sentiment shifted significantly following the readings in favor of the Arabs and that this shift was associated with particular propaganda techniques and logical fallacies appearing in the stories.

"Governments have long used propaganda to whip up public support during wartime and to demonize enemies", says Silverman. "Reuters is adopting these same techniques to covertly shape audience perceptions and opinion in violation of its corporate governance charter." Silverman points out that this is particularly troubling since "the news agency promotes itself as a paragon of accurate and impartial reporting and its stories are read by millions of people who are led to believe they are being provided objective facts".

In a story published on June 4, 2010 for example, Reuters correspondent Tom Perry and then-Jerusalem Bureau Chief Alastair Macdonald write:
"Israel is unlikely to heed calls to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip but i[t]s bloody seizure of a Turkish aid ship has caused international anger and American dismay that is forcing it to seek conciliatory moves.

Israel's leaders have been unrepentant. Prime Minister Netanyahu accused Europeans of hypocrisy over efforts to stop Iranian arms reaching Gaza's Hamas Islamist rulers.

But even with vital ally the United States criticizing the harm the blockade is doing to the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, and President Barack Obama calling the killing of nine men, including an American, a tragedy, Netanyahu is seeking points where concessions can soak up some of the pressure."

Perry and Macdonald's de facto editorial piece, which is identified in the headline as "Analysis" rather than with the more traditional and transparent term "Op-Ed" adopted by most media firms for stories where subjective content appears, is laden with propaganda devices and violations of the Reuters Handbook of Journalism.

First, by mischaracterizing the Mavi Marmara as an "aid ship", asymmetrical definition is being deployed to suggest a role for the ship distinctly different from the role it actually undertook and ultimately played in the incident. Although it is remotely possible Perry and Macdonald are utilizing the word "aid" to mean assistance in a socio-political sense, i.e., calling attention to the circumstances of Palestinians living in Gaza, readers are clearly and overtly being given the false impression that the Mavi Marmara carried humanitarian aid when it did not.

The statement, "Israel's leaders have been unrepentant" reflects both the propaganda device of innuendo and the use of loaded words, a violation of Reuters Handbook, as the language implicitly conveys a judgment of wrongdoing and moral condemnation of Israel's government officials for the incident which had neither been alleged nor proven by any juridical body.

"The harm the blockade is doing to the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza" reflects 1) anassertion; 2) exaggeration; 3) card stacking; and 4) atrocity propaganda respectively, as the phrase is 1) unproven; 2) inflates the impact of the "blockade" to encompass the entire population in Gaza; 3) omits mention of the fact that Egypt too, had been embargoing the Gaza Strip; and 4) alludes to the "blockade" as a war atrocity by virtue of its alleged deleterious effect on the civilian population, without mentioning that all manner of humanitarian goods had been regularly transiting through the Israeli land border with the Gaza Strip.

Het zijn het soort 'analyses' die je ook veelvuldig aantrof in de NRC, Trouw en de Volkskrant, en natuurlijk De Pers. Veel termen, zinswendingen en kwalificaties (ultranationlistisch voor Lieberman, hardline voor Netanjahoe, gematigd voor Abbas, illegale bezetting maar nooit illegaal terrorisme etc.) zijn zo normaal geworden dat je twee keer moet lezen om te zien dat het geen objectieve informatie is en er continu een negatieve grondtoon jegens Israel onder zit. Een toon die je niet meer bewust waarneemt maar wel zijn invloed heeft en je manipuleert.

Op Israel Palestijnen nieuwsblog schreef ik naar aanleiding van dit onderzoek:

"Ik zou zelf niet eens zeker durven stellen dat zoiets bewust gebeurt met de intentie de lezer te beïnvloeden al zullen er zeker journalisten zijn die dat doel wel hebben. Ik denk dat de gekleurde berichtgeving van bijna alle Europese en ook een aantal Amerikaanse kwaliteitsmedia voortkomt uit een bepaalde visie, een paradigma, dat zo vanzelfsprekend is geworden dat men zich er niet bewust van is: ' De Palestijnen zijn de slachtoffers, zij betalen voor de loop van de geschiedenis, Israel is de bezettende macht en draagt het leeuwendeel van de verantwoordelijkheid voor het conflict. Israel moet op zijn gedrag worden aangesproken, want het heeft de macht en vervult daarom een sleutelrol. Bovendien is Israel als overreactie op de tragische geschiedenis van de Joden een zeer militaristisch land geworden waar men alles met geweld denkt te kunnen oplossen en niemand meer vertrouwt. ' Dergelijke ideeën zitten zo diep ingebakken dat ze onbewust doorklinken in de berichtgeving over het conflict.

Bij Anja Meulenbelt gebeurt dit ook, maar dan nog veel extremer en ook volkomen bewust. Met iedere blogpost vergroot ze de haat tegen Israel, laat ze Israel weer als onmenselijk zien, wreed, erop uit te kleineren en te treiteren. De foto's waarop een Israelische soldaat met geweer tegenover een Palestijns kind of ongewapende vrouw staat zijn niet te tellen. Vaak is op de achtergrond prikkeldraad te zien, of de muur, of een wachttoren. Hamas, raketten, zelfmoordaanslagen, oproepen Israeli's en Joden te doden, ze komen simpelweg niet voor op haar blog en in haar wereld. Ook in de media is er voor Palestijns extremisme niet veel ruimte. Uit mijn onderzoek naar NRC Handelsblad bleek duidelijk dat bijna alle aandacht uitgaat naar de bezetting, de blokkade van Gaza, checkpoints, de muur, en allerlei ander leed van de Palestijnen dat aan Israel toegeschreven kan worden. Dat geldt ook voor de NOS, waar twee onderzoeken naar zijn gedaan en de Israelische kant eveneens volkomen werd genegeerd. Het onderzoek naar Reuters laat zien dat er een direct verband is tussen gekleurde berichtgeving en het gebruik van bepaalde propagandatechnieken, en de visie van mensen over het betreffende onderwerp.

Er zou nog veel meer onderzoek nodig zijn naar de berichtgeving van verschillende media, waarbij verschillende methodes worden gebruikt zodat uiteindelijk gaat doordringen dat er iets heel fundamenteel niet klopt. Ook meer vergelijkend onderzoek zou wenselijk zijn, zoals deze case studie naar de berichtgeving van verschillende Duitse media over een Palestijnse aanslag op een bus in Jeruzalem.

Overigens zijn er wel meer conflicten en kwesties waar niet objectief over wordt bericht en een kant wordt onderbelicht. Meestal gaat het dan om geweld en wandaden van een algemeen als zwakker en sympathieker beschouwde partij zoals de Kroaten tegenover de Serviërs, de wreedheden van de Polen en Tsjechen tegenover de Sudeten- en andere Oost Duitsers vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, het geweld van zwarten tegen blanken in Zuid-Afrika en Zimbabwe, etc. Het verschil met het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict is dat het bij deze conflicten gaat om een partij die over het geheel genomen een zeer kwalijke rol heeft gespeeld en als dader, slechterik zo je wilt kan worden aangeduid, en dat het geweld tegen hen wel in perspectief plaatst. Dat rechtvaardigt het negeren van wandaden en geweld tegen deze partij niet, maar maakt het wel minder extreem dan de vooringenomenheid van de media tegen Israel.

Anja Meulenbelt c.s. zullen zeggen: 'logisch dat mensen negatiever gaan denken over Israel wanneer ze stukje bij beetje achter de waarheid komen en de propagandapraatjes van Israel doorgeprikt worden'. Jammer alleen dat het dus niet om de waarheid gaat, zoals bij Mohammed Al Dura en vele andere Palestijnse 'martelaren'. Het feit dat velen Israel als een schurkenstaat zien op het niveau van Noord-Korea, Iran of Syrië zegt genoeg: in het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict komen per jaar een paar honderd mensen om, oorlogen zoals de Gaza oorlog en de Libanon oorlog niet meegerekend. De Palestijnse doden zijn in meerderheid strijders, ook tijdens de Gaza oorlog. De situatie op de Westbank is redelijk; ook Abbas gaf dit in een interview in de Washington Post in 2009 toe. Zelfs in de Gazastrook gaat het lang niet zo slecht als vaak wordt beweerd. Dagelijks komen er meer dan 250 vrachtwagens met hulp binnen, naast humanitaire hulp ook bouwmateriaal, brandstof en dergelijke en sinds kort wordt er ook geëxporteerd, onder andere aardbeien, bloemen en tomaten. Er wordt flink gebouwd, vooral luxe hotels, resorts en winkelcentra. De gemiddelde Gazaan is niet rijk, maar ook niet armer dan de gemiddelde Jordaniër of Libanees. In veel landen in het Midden-Oosten is er meer geweld tegen de eigen bevolking of tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen dan in Israel en de Palestijnse gebieden. Toch spreken antizionisten als Meulenbelt en Thomas von der Dunk van een langzame genocide en voortgaande etnische zuiveringen door Israel. Daarbij maken zij gebruik van bronnen als de 'historicus' Ilan Pappe, die zelf toegeeft meer aan propaganda te doen dan aan historisch onderzoek.

Veel mensen zijn verbaasd wanneer zij horen dat Arabieren in Israel mogen stemmen en in de Knesset zitten, dat Arabieren wel mogen maar niet hoeven te dienen in het leger, dat 20% van de studenten in Haifa Arabisch is, dat Israel tienduizenden Palestijnen per jaar in haar ziekenhuizen behandelt en zo nog wat zaken. Dat past namelijk allemaal niet in het beeld dat men van de media hier krijgt, en al helemaal niet in het beeld dat je van Meulenbelt krijgt. Meulenbelt zal verheugd zijn over het onderzoek naar Reuters, maar journalisten zouden zich dit aan moeten trekken.

UNESCO stopt steun aan Palestijns jongerenblad waarin Hitler werd bedankt

Nadat PMW met het bericht kwam dat in het Palestijnse tienerblad Zayafuna Hitler werd bedankt voor de holocaust, schreef het Simon Wiesenthal Centre een boze brief aan UNESCO, dat het blad tijdelijk had gesteund. UNESCO heeft zich inmiddels gedistancieerd van het magazine en gezegd dit niet langer te zullen financieren. Ook zegt men slechts enkele nummers te hebben gefinancierd. Uit de brief van UNESCO:

UNESCO supported the publication of three issues of the Zayzafouna Magazine six months after the February 2011 issue. The support was provided for these issues following agreement with the editorial board that they would focus on building greater appreciation amongst Palestinians for their heritage and culture. They were to open the way for positive dialogue aimed at overcoming the consequences of the Middle East conflict, and to fight against stereotypes that may be conducive to violence. It was UNESCO's intention to foster a positive view ofPalestinian heritage based on the values of tolerance and UNESCO's mandate of building peace in the minds of men and women. This vision guides all of UNESCO's activities, and we urge all partners to work in this direction.

UNESCO is shocked and dismayed by the content of the February issue, and has requested more detailed information and clarification from the editors of the magazine and to Palestinian Authority.
UNESCO strongly deplores and condemns the reproduction of such inflammatory statements in a magazine associated with UNESCO's name and mission and will not provide any further support to the publication in question.
The Organization, which is deeply committed to the development and promotion of education about the Holocaust, disassociates itself from any statement that is counter to its founding principles and goals of building tolerance in the full respect for human rights and human dignity.

Dat is mooi, maar roept wel de vraag op waarom men dit niet eerder had opgemerkt. Blijkbaar werd dit magazine, zonder het verder goed te bekijken, gesteund omdat het op het eerste gezicht een gematigde boodschap leek uit te dragen. En als je toch al meent dat de Palestijnen de slachtoffers zijn met het recht aan hun kant, dan kom je niet zo snel op het idee dat er dit soort akelige dingen in een magazine voor nota bene kinderen kunnen staan. Het betreffende verhaal was van een meisje van tien, en je kunt je afvragen hoe het komt dat zij dergelijke ideeën heeft, en waar die haat vandaan komt? Naast het stoppen van de steun zou dat een interessante vraag zijn voor de UNESCO, en een die een ieder met sympathie voor de Palestijnen niet uit de weg mag gaan.

PMW wijst erop dat ook de Palestijnse Autoriteit nauw betrokken is bij Zayafuna:

Simon Wiesenthal Center asks UN cultural agency to halt its sponsorship of the Palestinian childrens' magazine.

NEW YORK The Simon Wiesenthal Center asked UNESCO's director-general Wednesday to suspend its sponsorship of a Palestinian children's magazine, saying the magazine applauded Hitler for murdering Jews.

According to Palestinian Media Watch, the educational children's magazine, Zayafuna, "includes terms glorifying jihad."

The PMW report references an essay in the magazine by a teenage Palestinian girl. The girl wrote about meeting Adolf Hitler in a dream, who tells her that he killed the Jews "so you would all know that they are a nation who spreads destruction all over the world." In the essay, Hitler tells the child to be patient regarding the suffering of the Palestinians at the hands of the Jews.

In a letter to UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova, Shimon Samuels, the Wiesenthal Center's director for international relations, wrote that the editors of Zayafuna "endorse Adolf Hitler as a role model for Palestinian children," noting that a quarter of the children's submission selected for publication by the magazine "express hatred for Jews and reflect messages transmitted through PA official media."

"Apparently, the magazine's positive messages on coexistence and peace apply to all but Jews and Israelis," Samuels wrote. "Through a young girl, the Holocaust is presented as an act for the benefit of humanity."

The Palestinian Authority's deputy minister of educationand its former minister of education are both on the magazine's advisory board, Samuels noted.

UNESCO, Samuels said, has sponsored Zayafuna since August. The Hitler essay ran in the magazine's February 2011 issue.

While Samuels noted the October edition states that "opinions expressed in this magazine do not necessarily express UNESCO's views," Samuels wrote that this disclaimer was "hardly a fitting response to the discovery of the repugnant Holocaust celebration in the February issue."

Samuels recalled the Simon Wiesenthal Center's suggestion last month "when 'Palestine' was welcomed into UNESCO, that the new member be tested by being held to the declared values of UNESCO."

"Until Zayafuna publicly apologizes for its anti-Semitism, Palestine will have already failed that test," Samuels wrote, and urged UNESCO to demand that PA President Mahmoud Abbas rescind funding for the magazine.

PMW head Itamar Marcus said his organization welcomes the Wiesenthal Center's call to UNESCO to stop funding the magazine Zayafuna.

"UNESCO's continued funding of a hate magazine makes them a participant in the hatepromotion it disseminates," Marcus said. "It would be a violation of basic moral principles to fund a Palestinian magazine that glorifies violence and jihad, and presents Hitler as a role model for children.

"The only way, it seems, the Palestinian Authority will ever stop its repeated hatepromotion is if there are financial consequences to their hate promotion," Marcus said. "Let us hope that UNESCO takes the morally decent route and stops the funding, and not the politically expedient route of turning away in the face of Palestinian hatred."

PARIS/PRAGUE (EJP)---European Jewish Congress (EJC) President Moshe Kantor said former Czech Republic president Vaclav Havel, who died on Sunday, "was known as a great friend of the Jews and did much to confront anti-Semitism and teach the lessons of the dark chapter of the Holocaust during his two terms in office."

Vaclav Havel, a dissident playwright who was jailed by communists and then went on to lead the Prague "Velvet Revolution" and become Czech president, died at 75 after a long illness.

"He was a figure for a new and modern Europe to emulate. President Havel lived through communism and led the Czech Republic to a new era helping move his countrymen through a troubled past to a more open, free and tolerant future," Kantor said.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Havel was a"true friend" of Israel who in recent years joined The Friends of Israel group with other international leaders to defend the Jewish state against delegitimization.

The Friends of Israel Initiative mourns the passing of Czech President Vaclav Havel, one of our Founding Members.

President Havel knew far better than most the value of freedom, democracy and human rights, and the price of repression and intolerance.

He knew the importance of distinguishing between the forces of liberty and those arrayed against human progress and freedom.

That clear focus was pronounced in President Havel’s support for FII, and his view that the State of Israel is an integral part of the West whose right to exist in peace and prosperity was not only a moral certainty, but also the obligation of all human beings of good conscious to defend.

As a leader of people dedicate to throwing off the yolk of hatred and totalitarianism, and a shining beacon to those across the globe beaten down by oppression and long odds, his entire life is a vibrant example of the power of one man’s courage.

President Havel was dedicated to the cause of the Friends of Israel Initiative because of these core values.

He lived a life dedicated to fighting the politics of hate - and that included fighting anti-Semitism and hatred of the Jewish State and the politics of demonization, delegitimization and incitement directed at the one true free, Western country in the Middle East.

It was the lessons he learned under communism and in the fight for his people’s liberty that magnified his appreciation for the justice of Israel’s cause and what a vibrant Jewish State represents in the fight for freedom and against intolerance.

The Friends of Israel Initiative planned to honor President Havel in Prague past spring for his leadership and extraordinary dedication to our cause, but his health and hospitalization prevented that celebration.

The following is an excerpt from Deception: Betraying the Peace Process, chapter 14, section 1:

The Palestinian Authority funds a monthly educational magazine for children called Zayzafuna. The magazine is made up of material written by the magazine's staff and also includes essays and poems written by children. Accordingly, Zayzafuna both represents the values of the educators and serves as a window into the minds of the participating Palestinian children. The magazine is published with the sponsorship of the PLO's Palestinian National Committee for Education, Culture and Sciences.

Most of the content in Zayzafuna is positive and educational. It promotes family values, encourages children to read and to participate in building a modern, democratic society. However, these positive messages are directed at Palestinian society, Muslims, Christians and Druze. When it comes to portraying Israel and Jews, Zayzafuna changes its tone and includes items glorifying Jihad against Israel and praising Martyrdom death for Allah, and the Martyrs themselves.

The most extreme expression of demonization of Jews is the inclusion of an essay submitted by a teenage girl in which Hitler is presented as a positive figure to be admired because he killed Jews in order to benefit the world.

The girl in her dream asks Hitler: "You're the one who killed the Jews?" Hitler responds: "Yes. I killed them so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destruction all over the world." Like the other hate messages, this appears in a story with positive messages by other admired figures, including a Muslim Nobel Prize recipient and a math scholar. See the full text below.

In addition, the magazine portrays a world where "Palestine" has replaced Israel by referring to Israeli cities such as Haifa and Jaffa as places in "Palestine" or as "occupied" cites. It denies Israel's right to exist by saying that Israel is on "stolen" or "occupied" land, and demonizes Israel and Jews. Approximately one fourth of the children's submissions are on nationalistic topics, and among them are expressions of hatred and delegitimization against Jews and Israel that mirror the messages transmitted by the PA leadership through official media, PA education and other structures under their control.

It is specifically because this is not a hate magazine, but in general a positive publication promoting good values, that the hatred expressed towards Israel and Jews is so damaging. All the positive messages about coexistence and peace, which abound throughout the magazine, apply to everyone but Israelis and Jews. The message of Zayzafuna concerning Israelis and Jews is that they are in a unique category separated from other peoples and religious groups: For others - peace, cooperation and coexistence; for Israelis and Jews - hatred, confrontation and Jihad.

Hitler admired because he murdered Jews

The Zayzafuna magazine chose to publish an essay written by a girl in 10th grade in which Hitler is admired because he killed the Jews - an act that is presented as a positive accomplishment for the benefit of humanity. The girl describes a dream in which she meets four historical figures, all of whom are presented as admired role models, and each one's special accomplishment is the topic of a short conversation with the girl. Three of them are the ninth-century Muslim mathematician Al-Khwarizmi; Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz; and Saladin, the Muslim leader who defeated the Christian Crusaders and conquered Jerusalem in the 12th century. The fourth and only non-Muslim role model in the dream is Adolf Hitler.

All four are presented as positive figures and each one offers advice to the young girl, which she accepts. Hitler is admired because he killed the Jews "so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destruction all over the world." Hitler advises the girl to "be resilient and patient" in facing the suffering the Jews are causing. The girl thanks Hitler for his advice.

Significantly, Zayzafuna's editors chose to include this submission in the magazine, without dissociating themselves from the admiration of Hitler. They found it an acceptable message to have Hitler appear with other role models for Palestinian children.

The following is the essay in Zayzafuna presenting Hitler with other positive role models.

"One hot day, I was very tired after a hard day... and suddenly I saw four white doors in front of me. I opened them in no particular order.

I opened the f irst door and saw a beautiful place full of f lowers. I was surprised to see a man there. I asked him, 'Who are you?'

He said, 'I am Al-Khwarizmi.' [Ninth century Persian mathematician who lived in Baghdad, known for his contribution to the development of algebra.]

I said: 'You're the one who invented mathematics and arithmetic?' He said: 'Yes. What's your situation like today?'

I said: 'The Arabs and Muslims are in a deep sleep; they can't do anything. They have moved away from all the sciences.'

He [Al-Khwarizmi] said: 'Yes, I know that. The day will come when the Arabs will return to their glory. And you - you have a great duty, which is to take an interest in the Islamic sciences and to protect them from being forgotten.'

I said, 'I promise,' and left the door.

I turned to the next door; there Hitler awaited me. I said, 'You're the one who killed the Jews?'

He [Hitler] said: 'Yes. I killed them so you would all know that they are a nation which spreads destruction all over the world. And what I ask of you is to be resilient and patient, concerning the suffering that Palestine is experiencing at their hands.'

I said [to Hitler]: 'Thanks for the advice.'

Then I turned to the third door, and met Naguib Mahfouz [Nobel Prize- winning Egyptian author], who was the one who knew best the value of time and how to use it.

He said: 'People's pastime, these days, has become killing time and wasting it, as though they are punishing themselves. So strive to use your time in the best way.'

At the fourth door I meet Saladin Al-Ayoubi [Muslim leader who defeated the Christian crusaders and conquered Jerusalem in the twelfth century]. He said: 'I am Saladin.'

I said: 'You were the one who liberated Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa [Mosque].' He answered: 'Yes.'

I said: 'Return, oh Saladin, for Jerusalem and Palestine cry out and no one answers.'

He [Saladin] said: 'I know, but every time has its men, and the right man to liberate Jerusalem is still to come.'

And before I could finish my dream, the alarm clock rang and I woke up. It was seven in the morning, and I needed to go to school early, because I had promised Naguib Mahfouz that I would use time well."

Although repugnant, a Palestinian teenager's admiration for Hitler because he killed Jews, alongside other Muslim role models, is not unexpected. As PMW documents, Palestinian children are brought up with the teaching that killing Israelis and Jews is heroic. The PA has named streets, schools, sporting events and more after Palestinian terrorists who have killed hundreds of Israeli civilians. In Palestinian cultural, educational and social events, every Palestinian child is exposed to repeated glorification of terrorists who have killed Jews. Palestinian children have participated in summer camps named after Dalal Mughrabi who led a bus hijacking in which 37 civilians were killed, and played in football tournaments named after Abd Al-Basset Odeh, a suicide bomber who killed 31 Israelis at a Passover dinner. It is not surprising that a Palestinian child who has been educated to see those who have murdered Jews as heroes and role models will conclude that Hitler, the one who murdered the most Jews in history, is likewise worthy of admiration.

Deputy Chairman of the Zayzafuna organization Abd Al-Karim Ziyada has explained the following about the funding of Zayzafuna:

"The magazine has advertisements, which cover some of the costs. For the year 2010-2011 we have subscriptions by students and schools, and that also helps [funding the magazine]. We are fortunate in that the Palestinian Authority and the Prime Minister [Salam Fayyad] have helped us this year with aid in the amount of 90,000 Shekel ($24,370) to cover the magazine and organization costs, and that has given us a push forward. Allah be praised, there is a new agreement for a monthly [PA] payment of 10,000 Shekel ($2,700) to cover the magazine [costs]."

Elsbeth Etty blijft strijdvaardig haar hersenspinsels uitdragen

Een genuanceerd artikel van Carel Brendel over Elsbeth Etty en de vraag of (en waardoor) de persvrijheid in Nederland wordt bedreigd. Ik had hem gemist, maar nog zeer actueel. Volgens Etty zou de persvrijheid onder druk staan van intimidatie door de PVV waardoor journalisten aan zelfcensuur doen. Ze verliest binnenkort haar column in de NRC, wat ze als symptoom hiervan opvat. Brendel bestrijdt dit, en wijst erop dat de PVV behoorlijk kritisch wordt bejegend door de pers:

Ondanks het opgewonden gedrag van sommige PVV-aanhangers en het beperkte vrijheidsbegrip in de PVV-gelederen bespeur ik niet dat de pers het niet meer tegen deze partij durft op te nemen. Wel krijgen de standpunten van de PVV veel aandacht wat niet zo gek is voor een partij met 24 zetels die als gedoogpartner fungeert voor het zittende kabinet. PVV'ers krijgen net als andere politici ruimte op opiniepagina's en kunnen hun woord doen in interviews. Daarnaast is er sinds Pim Fortuyn (vooral buiten NRC Handelsblad) meer ruimte gekomen voor allerlei auteurs, die kritisch staan tegenover de islam zonder per se de visie van de PVV te delen. De generatie van linkse opiniemakers als Elsbeth Etty, die in de jaren '80 en '90 de Nederlandse meningsvorming monopoliseerde, heeft niet meer het alleenvertoningsrecht. Dat is heel jammer voor Etty. Maar het is geen bewijs voor haar theorie dat de Nederlandse journalistiek zwicht voor de intimidatie van de PVV.

Vervolgens poneert hij de stelling dat juist de islam een bedreiging vormt voor de persvrijheid. Als voorbeelden noemt hij het feit dat Afshin Ellian vorig jaar is ontslagen bij NRC Handelsblad en het feit dat er nauwelijks over islamitisch gefundeerd antisemitisme wordt geschreven. Ook verwijst hij naar Hans Molls boek over de berichtgeving van de NRC over Israel. Zit wat in, maar zelf denk ik dat het dieper zit: er zijn in iedere samenleving en binnen iedere gemeenschap dingen die veel aandacht krijgen en dingen die worden verzwegen. Niet omdat een specifieke groep je bedreigt als je erover praat, maar omdat men het niet wil horen, niet geinteresseerd is, het niet als een issue ziet. Er is bovendien steeds meer aandacht voor het slachtoffer, de zwakkere, en dat draagt bij aan de eenzijdige berichtgeving over Israel en de Palestijnen. De Joden zijn slachtoffer-af, men vindt dat ze genoeg aandacht hebben gekregen als vervolgde minderheid en antisemitische noties over Joodse lobbies en -almacht steken de kop weer op. Dat heeft niet perse met de invloed van de islam te maken, maar het ligt voor de hand dat wanneer antisemitisme niet als probleem wordt gezien men moslims daar ook niet op zal aanspreken. Maar dit zijn evenzeer speculaties als Brendels these dat de media zich door moslims laten intimideren.

De vrijmetselaars in mijn woonplaats Amersfoort hebben een abonnement op vertrekkende NRC-columnisten. Vorig jaar verzorgde rechtsgeleerde en islamcriticus Afshin Ellian de jaarlijkse, ook voor niet-leden toegankelijke lezing. Afgelopen vrijdag stond op dezelfde plaats NRC-redacteur Elsbeth Etty. Onlangs kondigde de Belgische hoofdredacteur Peter Vandermeersch aan dat haar vaste column per 1 januari verdwijnt. Een extra reden om de lezing bij te wonen. Ik werd niet teleurgesteld. Etty ontvouwde haar stellingen over de door Geert Wilders en Martin Bosma geïntimideerde media in hun volle glorie. Ze spaarde de leiding van haar eigen krant niet. Vrijwel onbesproken bleef of Etty's uit losse elementen opgebouwde theorie wel overeenstemt met de werkelijkheid.

Elsbeth Etty heeft een vlijmscherpe pen. Ze formuleert en argumenteert helder en is niet bang om krachtige taal te gebruiken. Zelfs als je het hartgrondig met haar oneens bent, is het vaak een feest om haar columns te lezen. Dat ik vier jaar geleden mijn abonnement op NRC Handelsblad opzegde, ligt dan ook niet aan Etty. Wel speelde de eenzijdige samenstelling van de opiniepagina's een belangrijke rol. Buiten de inmiddels weggestuurde Ellian liet de krant nauwelijks afwijkende geluiden toe. Wat dat betreft voel ik me als lezer meer thuis bij de Volkskrant, die de politieke diversiteit veel beter in de praktijk brengt. De papieren krant en de website geven daar alle ruimte aan zowel de verdedigers als de critici van de multiculturele samenleving. Eurosceptici en Europa-verdedigers krijgen beiden een kans. Pieter Hilhorst en Evelien Tonkens staan er zij aan zij met Nausicaa Marbe en Martin Sommer. In de herberg is er plaats voor Bert Brussen én voor Thomas von der Dunk.

'Het belang van persvrijheid' was de titel van Etty's lezing. Die vrijheid staat volgens haar onder druk door de dreigende zelfcensuur van journalisten, die zouden wijken voor de intimidatie van de PVV. Haar aanstaande vertrek als NRC-columniste heeft volgens haar te maken met het door Geert Wilders en zijn ideoloog Martin Bosma gecreëerde klimaat. In de stijl van de Amerikaanse communistenvreter Joe McCarthy zouden zij jacht maken op alles wat links is.

Etty droeg daarbij uitgebreid voor uit een column, die vorig jaar uit de papieren krant werd gehouden door Vandermeersch, maar wel opinternet verscheen. Inderdaad, dat was een vergaande ingreep. De hoofdredactie van een krant heeft het recht om op een gepast moment afscheid te nemen van een columnist. Maar het is vrijwel ongekend om een bijdrage van een vaste auteur uit de kolommen te weren. Er stond die dag al een artikel over het boek van Bosma in de krant, was het zwakke argument van de Belg. De redactieraad reageerde met een terechte veroordeling van de actie van Vandermeersch.

Er zijn volgens Etty meer signalen dat de media wijken voor de PVV, niet alleen de ingrepen in haar column en de beëindiging ervan. Het vertrek van Clairy Polak bij Nieuwsuur is volgens haar een rechtstreeks gevolg van de intimidaties door PVV-Kamerlid Bosma. Een ander bewijs is voor haar een recente ontboezeming van VN-redacteur Max van Weezel. Onder de Haagse journalisten zou angst bestaan om de PVV hard aan te pakken. Redacteuren rond het Binnenhof zouden bang zijn voor de haat- en dreigmails van de zelfverklaarde Geert-aanhangers. Daarnaast zouden verslaggevers beducht zijn voor een reputatie als demoniseerder. Door dit alles, in combinatie met commercieel denkende hoofdredacteuren die steeds vaker ook op de directiestoel zitten komt de Nederlandse persvrijheid in het gedrang, vertelde Etty. Zij riep haar collega's op om meer ruggengraat te tonen.

Tijdens haar lezing en in de discussie na de pauze vertelde de journaliste interessante dingen over de gang van zaken ter redactie. Tegen de aanstaande opheffing van haar column zijn minstens honderd protestbrieven binnengekomen, maar die worden niet geplaatst. Ze is verbaasd over het vertrek van de vorige hoofdredacteur Birgit Donker, die door 'een coup' het veld moest ruimen. Ze vindt het fout dat hoofdredactie en directie steeds meer op één stoel zitten en in het zogeheten 'Westerdokberaad' brainstormen over de strategie. 'De journalistieke onafhankelijkheid is een belangrijke verworvenheid. De redactie maakt de krant, de directie is er voor de bezorging.' Etty blijft overigens zo nu en dan opiniestukken schrijven, alleen niet meer op haar vaste wekelijkse stek.

"Helaas stel ik vast dat de kwaliteitsjournalistiek steeds meer in het geding komt. Laatst kreeg ik het verzoek om een verhaal te schrijven over de derde vrouw van de emir van Qatar. Dat moest binnen een paar dagen. Ik vond de tijd te kort. Een stukje bij elkaar googelen kan een stagiaire net zo goed. Later bleek dat het artikel onderdeel was van een soort advertorial. Architect Rem Koolhaas had in Qatar een belangrijke opdracht gekregen. Daarom was het helemaal niet de bedoeling dat er kritisch zou worden geschreven over de vrouw van de emir."

Laat ik beginnen met de punten waarop de NRC-journaliste gelijk heeft. Allereerst de burgerlijke moed. Als journalisten bang zijn voor dreigende reacties van lezers, dan kunnen ze inderdaad beter een ander vak kiezen. Zoals het Engelse spreekwoord zegt: blijf weg uit de keuken als je niet tegen de hitte kunt. Etty is niet bang, zelfs niet voor haar eigen werkgever.

Etty heeft ook een punt als zij stelt dat de vrijheid van meningsuiting bij de PVV niet in goede handen is. Het 'grapje' van Dion Graus over perspolitie valt niet in het luchtledige. Eerder hadden we bijvoorbeeld al het verbod van een lezing van Von der Dunk (in samenspraak met andere partijen), de malle vragen van Bosma over de invloed die SP-financier* en miljonair Derk Sauer op de NRC zou uitoefenen, en de poging om subsidie te ontnemen aan het Nexus Instituut van PVV-criticus Rob Riemen. (Of dit instituut de subsidie werkelijk waard is, kan ik niet beoordelen. Maar als de jarenlange steun plotseling zou worden ingetrokken na Riemens opmerkingen over het 'fascisme' van de PVV, dan riekt dat naar wraakcensuur.)

Onbetwistbaar is ook dat critici van de PVV veel bagger over zich heen krijgen per mail of twitter. Zelfverklaarde Wilders-aanhangers zijn lichtgeraakt, weet ik uit eigen ervaring. Maar ook hier geldt: niet bang zijn. Volkomen terecht is Etty's woede over de door Bosma verkondigde Hitler-was-een-socialist-theorie , die tot vervelens toe op webfora wordt herhaald. Het was een van de kritiekpunten in mijn vergeleken met Etty milde recensie van Bosma's boek naast onder meer zijn alarmisme en de selectieve wijze, waarop hij putte uit mijn weblogs over PvdA-politicus Ahmed Marcouch.

Desondanks rammelt Etty's theorie op het allerbelangrijkste punt. Het probleem is namelijk dat ze in tegenspraak is met de werkelijkheid. De afgelopen maanden hebben journalisten en columnisten hun vingers blauw geschreven over de mogelijke overeenkomsten tussen de wereldbeschouwing van Bosma en de ideeën van de Noorse terrorist Anders Breivik. Dat duidt niet bepaald op een journalistieke angst voor de PVV. Weinig zachtzinnig was de pers ook over Bosma's Kamervragen over Sauer en de NRC. Net als bij eerdere interventies over 'geïslamiseerde' kinderprogramma's bij de publieke omroep kan de PVV-ideoloog rekenen op hoon en spot. Of het nu gaat om Wilders' opstelling rond de eurocrisis, de komst van de cavia cops, de avonturen van kandidaat-brievenbuspisser Eric Lucassen, uitglijers van lokale raadsleden in Almere en Den Haag, geschutter in provinciale PVV-fracties, zelden bespeur ik angst en ontzag bij de journalisten. De VARA-website Joop en de documentairemakers van Zembla en de VPRO buigen evenmin voor de polder-McCarthy's.

De afgelopen week werd Graus bijna collectief de grond in geschreven door de verzamelde Nederlandse pers vanwege zijn geschutter in de parlementaire enquêtecommissie voor de kredietcrisis en zijn opmerking over de perspolitie. Na de pauze stelde ik Etty hierover een vraag. "Hoe verklaart u dat Graus alom wordt afgeslacht (op dat moment dacht ik nog 'geheel terecht') als de pers zo geïntimideerd is door de PVV?" Het zou helemaal erg zijn, als de journalisten in zo'n geval hun werk niet goed zouden doen, reageerde Etty. Inmiddels komen er signalen dat de journalistiek haar werk in dit geval juist niet goed heeft gedaan. Dit gebeurde niet om de PVV te ontzien maar om deze partij te beschadigen. De NOS ligt nu onder vuur omdat ze Graus via knip-en-plakwerk in de verhoren van de enquêtecommissie als een volslagen idioot zou hebben neergezet. Buitenhof-columniste Naema Tahir hekelde gisteren 'de dubieuze rol van de NOS' en 'de overige media die het apenverhaal klakkeloos verspreidden'.

Ondanks het opgewonden gedrag van sommige PVV-aanhangers en het beperkte vrijheidsbegrip in de PVV-gelederen bespeur ik niet dat de pers het niet meer tegen deze partij durft op te nemen. Wel krijgen de standpunten van de PVV veel aandacht wat niet zo gek is voor een partij met 24 zetels die als gedoogpartner fungeert voor het zittende kabinet. PVV'ers krijgen net als andere politici ruimte op opiniepagina's en kunnen hun woord doen in interviews. Daarnaast is er sinds Pim Fortuyn (vooral buiten NRC Handelsblad) meer ruimte gekomen voor allerlei auteurs, die kritisch staan tegenover de islam zonder per se de visie van de PVV te delen. De generatie van linkse opiniemakers als Elsbeth Etty, die in de jaren '80 en '90 de Nederlandse meningsvorming monopoliseerde, heeft niet meer het alleenvertoningsrecht. Dat is heel jammer voor Etty. Maar het is geen bewijs voor haar theorie dat de Nederlandse journalistiek zwicht voor de intimidatie van de PVV.

Onbesproken in Etty's lezing bleef of er buiten de PVV en de groeiende greep van de commercie nog andere bedreigingen bestaan voor de onafhankelijke journalistiek. Wat bijvoorbeeld te denken van de stelling dat de islam een grote bedreiging vormt voor de persvrijheid in Nederland en dat met name de NRC zich laat intimideren? Ook daarvoor zijn de 'aanwijzingen' gemakkelijk vinden. Zo heeft de 'kwaliteitskrant' NRC niet bericht over de antisemitische haatpreken van Yusuf al-Qaradawi tijdens en kort na de Gaza-oorlog. Gebeurde dat misschien om de vrouw van de emir van Qatar, waar Qaradawi een thuisbasis heeft en mag preken voor de Arabische nieuwszenderAl-Jazeera, niet te ontrieven? Zijn rol als geestelijk leider van de Moslimbroederschap is nooit serieus geanalyseerd door de onderzoeksjournalisten van de NRC. Onlangs verscheen Hoe de nuance verdween uit een kwaliteitskrant. Daarin vertelt oud-redacteur Hans Moll aan de hand van voorbeelden over de in zijn ogen eenzijdige berichtgeving over Israël. (Binnenkort ga ik uitgebreider in op dit boek.) Volgens de redeneertrant van Etty is dit fenomeen een ander bewijs voor mijn theorie over journalistieke angst voor de islam.

Het opheffen van de column van islamcriticus Afshin Ellian, een fel tegenstander van de Iraanse ayatollahs, zou nog een aanwijzing kunnen zijn dat NRC Handelsblad buigt voor islamitische pressie. Een ander signaal is dat Nederlandse cartoonisten en cabaretiers graag de spot drijven met Wilders en zijn aanhang. Maar door de moord op Theo van Gogh en de buitenlandse cartoonkwesties durven ze geen grappen te maken over de islam.

Ik geef het toe, mijn suggestie dat de islam een bedreiging vormt voor de persvrijheid is niet meer dan een vrijblijvende gedachteoefening, geen met stelligheid geponeerde theorie. Maar ik vind hem wel een stuk plausibeler dan de hersenspinsels van Elsbeth Etty over aan de touwtjes van de PVV bungelende media.

Academische studie naar berichtgeving Reuters persbureau over Israel

Een studie naar de berichtgeving van persbureau Reuters toont aan dat zij zich niet houdt aan de journalistieke codes en consequent in het voordeel van de Palestijnen bericht. Het blijkt bovendien dat mensen door het lezen van berichten van Reuters sympathieker gaan staan tegenover de Palestijnen en negatiever over Israel gaan denken.

Across the articles, over 1,100 occurrences of propaganda, fallacies and handbook violations in 41 categories were identified and classified.

In the second part of the study, a group of thirty-three university students were surveyed, before and after reading the articles, to assess their attitudes and motivation to support one or the other belligerent parties in the Middle East conflict, i.e., the Palestinians/Arabs or the Israelis. The study found that on average, subject sentiment shifted significantly following the readings in favor of the Arabs and that this shift was associated with particular propaganda techniques and logical fallacies appearing in the stories.

"Governments have long used propaganda to whip up public support during wartime and to demonize enemies", says Silverman. "Reuters is adopting these same techniques to covertly shape audience perceptions and opinion in violation of its corporate governance charter." Silverman points out that this is particularly troubling since "the news agency promotes itself as a paragon of accurate and impartial reporting and its stories are read by millions of people who are led to believe they are being provided objective facts".

Ik zou zelf niet eens zeker durven stellen dat zoiets bewust gebeurt met de intentie de lezer te beinvloeden al zullen er zeker journalisten zijn die dat doel wel hebben. Ik denk dat de gekleurde berichtgeving van bijna alle Europese en ook een aantal Amerikaanse kwaliteitsmedia voortkomt uit een bepaalde visie, een paradigma, dat zo vanzelfsprekend is geworden dat men zich er niet bewust van is: ' De Palestijnen zijn de slachtoffers, zij betalen voor de loop van de geschiedenis, Israel is de bezettende macht en draagt het leeuwendeel van de verantwoordelijkheid voor het conflict. Israel moet op zijn gedrag worden aangesproken, want het heeft de macht en vervult daarom een sleutelrol. Bovendien is Israel als overreactie op de tragische geschiedenis van de Joden een zeer militaristisch land geworden waar men alles met geweld denkt te kunnen oplossen en niemand meer vertrouwt. ' Dergelijke ideeën zitten zo diep ingebakken dat ze onbewust doorklinken in de berichtgeving over het conflict.

Er zou nog veel meer onderzoek nodig zijn naar de berichtgeving van verschillende media, waarbij verschillende methodes worden gebruikt zodat uiteindelijk gaat doordringen dat er iets heel fundamenteel niet klopt. Overigens zijn er wel meer conflicten en kwesties waar niet objectief over wordt bericht en een kant wordt onderbelicht. Meestal gaat het dan om geweld en wandaden van een algemeen als zwakker en sympathieker beschouwde partij zoals de Kroaten tegenover de Serviërs, de wreedheden van de Polen en Tsjechen tegenover de Sudeten- en andere Oost Duitsers vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, het geweld van zwarten tegen blanken in Zuid-Afrika en Zimbabwe, etc. Het verschil met het Israelisch-Palestijns conflict is dat het bij deze conflicten gaat om een partij die over het geheel genomen een zeer kwalijke rol heeft gespeeld en als dader, slechterik zo je wilt kan worden aangeduid, en dat het geweld tegen hen wel in perspectief plaatst. Dat rechtvaardigt het negeren van wandaden en geweld tegen deze partij niet, maar maakt het wel minder extreem dan de vooringenomenheid van de media tegen Israel.

Stunning academic study: Reuters engages in anti-Israel propaganda

Roosevelt University academic study documents systematic use of propaganda by world's largest news agency.

A study published in the November/December issue of the Journal of Applied Business Research finds that Reuters coverage of the Middle East conflict is systematically tainted by propaganda and influences readers to side with the Palestinians and Arab states against the Israelis.

Researcher Henry Silverman of Roosevelt University analyzed a sample of fifty news-oriented articles published on the Reuters.com websites for the use of classic propaganda techniques, logical fallacies and violations of the Reuters Handbook of Journalism, a manual of guiding ethical principles for the company's journalists.

Across the articles, over 1,100 occurrences of propaganda, fallacies and handbook violations in 41 categories were identified and classified.

In the second part of the study, a group of thirty-three university students were surveyed, before and after reading the articles, to assess their attitudes and motivation to support one or the other belligerent parties in the Middle East conflict, i.e., the Palestinians/Arabs or the Israelis. The study found that on average, subject sentiment shifted significantly following the readings in favor of the Arabs and that this shift was associated with particular propaganda techniques and logical fallacies appearing in the stories.

The entire study is most interesting. It uses previously established, fairly rigorous criteria as to what constitutes "propaganda." It chose 50 articles about the conflict published by Reuters between May 31 and August 31, 2010 (during and after the Mavi Marmara incident.)

Here is how the study describes its analysis methods of the articles, with a detailed example:

Across the fifty articles in the data sample, ECA reveals 1,104 occurrences of reporting/ethical failures, i.e., propaganda devices, logical fallacies, and violations of the Reuters Handbook of Journalism, with a mean of 22.08 reporting/ethical failures per article. The propaganda device of asymmetrical definition occurs most frequently with a total of 129 instances followed by the propaganda device of card stacking with 94 occurrences. The logical fallacy occurring most frequently is appeal to pity and the Handbook violation occurring with the greatest frequency is that of a failure to uphold social responsibility.

An asymmetrical definition is a type of suggestion where the audience is misled via the propagandist's use of a word or phrase bearing a meaning different than that the audience would normally attribute to it (Smith, 1989). Reuters repetitive use of this technique can be seen in 16 of the sample articles published in June which focus on the story of a Turkish-led flotilla apprehended at sea while attempting to break the Israeli weapons blockade of the Gaza Strip. The flotilla consisted of six vessels, three of which were carrying construction materials and humanitarian aid for Palestinian Arabs (Palestinians) in Gaza. Five of the ships were boarded and subsequently impounded by the Israeli navy without loss of life or serious injury but the sixth ship, the Mavi Marmara, was the scene of violent clashes between passengers armed with cold weapons, e.g., knives and iron bars, and Israeli forces, armed with paintball guns and pistols.12 Although it went unreported by Reuters, inspection of the Mavi Marmara cargo hold immediately following the incident revealed no humanitarian aid on board the ship.13 Yet, in over a dozen stories in the data sample, Reuters conflates the Mavi Marmara with the other vessels, repeatedly using the word "aid" to describe the ship, its cargo, and its purported mission, i.e., to bring humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza.

In a story published on June 4, 2010 for example, Reuters correspondent Tom Perry and then-Jerusalem Bureau Chief Alastair Macdonald write:

Israel is unlikely to heed calls to lift the blockade of the Gaza Strip but is bloody seizure of a Turkish aid ship has caused international anger and American dismay that is forcing it to seek conciliatory moves.

Israel's leaders have been unrepentant. Prime Minister Netanyahu accused Europeans of hypocrisy over efforts to stop Iranian arms reaching Gaza's Hamas Islamist rulers.

But even with vital ally the United States criticizing the harm the blockade is doing to the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza, and President Barack Obama calling the killing of nine men, including an American, a tragedy, Netanyahu is seeking points where concessions can soak up some of the pressure.

Perry and Macdonald's de facto editorial piece, which is identified in the headline as "Analysis" rather than with the more traditional and transparent term "Op-Ed" adopted by most media firms for stories where subjective content appears, is laden with propaganda devices and violations of the Reuters Handbook of Journalism.

First, by mischaracterizing the Mavi Marmara as an "aid ship", asymmetrical definition is being deployed to suggest a role for the ship distinctly different from the role it actually undertook and ultimately played in the incident. Although it is remotely possible Perry and Macdonald are utilizing the word "aid" to mean assistance in a socio-political sense, i.e., calling attention to the circumstances of Palestinians living in Gaza, readers are clearly and overtly being given the false impression that the Mavi Marmara carried humanitarian aid when it did not.

The statement, "Israel's leaders have been unrepentant" reflects both the propaganda device of innuendo and the use of loaded words, a violation of Reuters Handbook, as the language implicitly conveys a judgment of wrongdoing and moral condemnation of Israel's government officials for the incident which had neither been alleged nor proven by any juridical body.

"The harm the blockade is doing to the 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza" reflects 1) anassertion; 2) exaggeration; 3) card stacking; and 4) atrocity propaganda respectively, as the phrase is 1) unproven; 2) inflates the impact of the "blockade" to encompass the entire population in Gaza; 3) omits mention of the fact that Egypt too, had been embargoing the Gaza Strip; and 4) alludes to the "blockade" as a war atrocity by virtue of its alleged deleterious effect on the civilian population, without mentioning that all manner of humanitarian goods had been regularly transiting through the Israeli land border with the Gaza Strip.17

Perry and Macdonald then cite President Barack Obama "calling the killing of nine men, including an American, a tragedy". What Obama actually said in the relevant interview with CNN one day prior to the publication of the Reuters story was the following:

What's important right now is that we break out of the current impasse, use this tragedy as an opportunity so that we figure out how can we meet Israel's security concerns, but, at the same time, start opening up opportunity for Palestinians, work with all parties concerned, the Palestinian Authority, the Israelis, the Egyptians, and others. And I think Turkey can have a positive voice in this whole process, once we've worked through this tragedy, and bring everybody together to figure out, how can we get a two-state solution where Palestinians and the Israelis can live side-by-side in peace and security.18

Note that Obama characterizes as a "tragedy" the incident generally, i.e., the violence and casualties on both sides, not the [Israeli] killing of nine men, including an American as Perry and Macdonald misstate. This reporting failure is, at a minimum, anuncorrected error and improper use/lack of quotes, both violations of the Reuters Handbook. More likely, given the easily accessible record of the President's televised comments just a day earlier, the mischaracterization reflects a historical reconstruction, i.e., intentional fabrication, on the part of Perry and Macdonald.

One other of the many examples given to illustrate a specific propaganda technique:

Employing a propaganda device known as symbolic fiction, Sawafta and Hamilton cite a study by an Israeli non-government organization:

A report this week by Israeli human rights group B'Tselem says more than 300,000 Israelis now live on 42 percent of the West Bank, land where Palestinians want to establish their future country in a "two-state solution" with Israel.

The B'Tselem study does not say this. Rather, the report indicates that Jewish communities reside upon less than 1 percent of this disputed territory. There is an allegation that due to the classification of a portion of the territory as "state land" by Israel, 42 percent of it is controlled by Israeli Jewish councils.47 Even this claim however, has been rejected by the Chairman of the Council of Jewish Communities who puts the figure at 9 percent. Following presentation of this fiction, Sawafta and Hamilton again violate Reuters' fairness doctrine by failing to provide space for any Israeli official to respond to the fictionalized claim in their story.

The survey given after the volunteers read the stories asked two very simple questions.

1) After reading this article, I feel more sympathetic or favorable towards:

The results?

For both survey questions, there is a large and extremely significant difference between the mean subject response prior to undertaking the readings and the mean response following the individual readings. ...Subjects take a largely neutral view of the belligerents going into the study (untransformed mean 3.18) but substantially shift their view in favor of the Arabs/Palestinians over the course of the readings (untransformed mean 2.17). Similarly, prior to the readings subjects are nearly dead neutral on whether they feel motivated to take supportive action on behalf of one or the other belligerent parties (untransformed mean 3.12) but over the course of the readings, subjects feel significantly more motivated to take supportive action on behalf of the Arabs/Palestinians (untransformed mean 2.35).

Consistent with the findings of Likert (1932), Rosenthal (1934), and other researchers employing linear scales to measure the effect of propaganda on audience attitudes and behavior, Reuters' stories are clearly influencing reader sentiment, in this case by shifting it favorably toward the Arabs/Palestinians and away from the Israelis.

The paper goes on to note that the higher the "propaganda" rating of the piece, the more the subjects shifted their opinions towards the Palestinian Arab side of the story.

This is stunning. While I can see how it may be possible for the researchers to be less than perfectly objective in categorizing phrases in different subjective buckets, the major result is that Reuters stories cause readers to act in ways consistent to having been subjected to anti-Israel propaganda.

While there have been a number of attempts to quantify bias in specific media outlets, this is the most objective and scientific study I have seen in for the Middle East conflict. It proves, as much as something like this can be proven, that Reuters is systematically and institutionally biased against Israel.

It would be most enlightening to see a comparison of different news sources using these same techniques over the same time period.

The controversy over Jenin hints at a deeper, wider issue, however, and that is the entire tone of media coverage on Israel and the Middle East.

"What's really going on here is confusing, because the real dialogue is not whether there was a massacre or not a massacre," Himel says.

"The real dialogue is: Is Israel or Palestine legitimate or not legitimate? It's all a matter of point of view. For people who feel Israel is an illegitimate state, it doesn't matter if it was one person here and two people there. Whatever Israel does is going to be wrong, because it's an illegitimate country.

"That's the real discussion. The massacre thing just echoes the real discussion. Sometimes I say to myself that everything would be better if we just had the real discussion."

Steeds meer mensen keuren alles wat Israel doet af, en het enige dat ze zouden accepteren is onvoorwaardelijke overgave. Nooit reageren op Palestijns geweld en allerlei concessies doen zonder iets terug te verwachten. Worden concessies met geweld beantwoord? Dan waren ze blijkbaar niet goed genoeg. Reageert een Israelische politicus een keer gepikeerd terug nadat Achmadinejad, Assad of Erdogan vrijuit hun beledigingen rondstrooien, dan is Israel arrogant en speelt met vuur, of verspeelt zijn weinige vriendschappen in de regio. Wanneer de Palestijnen en Arabieren Israel diplomatiek tegenwerken is dat natuurlijk helemaal logisch, maar wanneer Israel zich verzet tegen het Palestijnse lidmaatschap van VN organen en het zo omzeilen van directe onderhandelingen met Israel, dan is dat natuurlijk zeer verwerpelijk. A new documentary explores the damaging myth and underlying media bias against Israel.

Two years ago, spurred to act by a series of suicide bombings that took the lives of some 87 Israeli citizens and wounded 570 others, the Israeli Defense Force attacked what it believed to be a terrorist stronghold in the heart of the West Bank town of Jenin, a place of densely packed buildings and labyrinthine alleys and home to a close-knit core of Palestinian fighters thought to be responsible for 25 per cent of the bombings.

What happened that day was said to be a massacre on the scale of Bosnia, Kosovo and Chechnya, with entire buildings flattened and hundreds of Palestinian civilians killed.

People around the world assumed this to be true because United Nations aid workers, The Independent, the Times of London, The Guardian, BBC News and a host of other media organizations across Europe reported it to be so.

"Massacre evidence growing," a headline on BBC's website blared on April 18, 2002.

There was just one small problem. None of that happened.

The truth would come out eventually, Canadian reporter Martin Himel reports in his new documentary, Jenin: Massacring Truth. But the damage was done.

The myth of the massacre endures to this day, even though the BBC was backpedalling within days of the initial reports.

Little more than 10 days after accusations of a massacre were posted on the BBC's website, British military expert David Holley, a major in the British Territorial Army and military adviser to Amnesty International, was quoted on the same site saying Israel was right to challenge the UN observers' claims.

Holley cited numbers closer to "possibly 54 bodies. . . with possibly 20 or 30 unaccounted for."

He could not verify those figures until the entire site was cleared.

Massacre is an overused word, Holley said, and not very helpful in situations like that.

Three months later, in August 2002, the United Nations and Human Rights Watch put the final fatality figures at 26 Palestinian fighters, 26 civilians and 23 Israeli soldiers.

But the genie was out of the bottle, and once out, it would prove next to impossible to put back in.

The "massacre" is now part of the historical record, promulgated in part by a Palestinian documentary film, Jenin, Jenin, that equated the Israeli incursion into the town with war crimes and ethnic cleansing, and by the refusal of many European journalists who covered the initial story to admit they got the facts wrong.

Himel chose to make his documentary through the eyes and recollections of an Israeli reservist, Johnathan Van Caspel, a man who has felt the stain of being branded a war criminal.

Himel managed to get his hands on camcorder footage taken by both Van Caspel's unit and, remarkably, that of Palestinian fighters in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, to take viewers inside what in actuality was a nasty urban firefight, full of frenzied confusion and near-panic.

"I tried to put the (viewer) right into what it's like to fight urban warfare, to be in it," Himel explained by phone from Israel.

"The unusual thing in this film is that the fighting was filmed by the fighters on both sides. Today, with these little home video cameras, instead of people taking stills of their buddies in war, they can actually film the war.

"What I tried to do was put the viewer right in there. And what I mean by that is, it's confusing. You don't see the enemy.

"You don't know where the bullets are coming from. It's scary. No one really knows what's going on. And that's really what it's like."

Himel wanted his film to reflect both the macro view and the micro view of what happened that day in Jenin.

The micro view is the personal story of an Israeli reservist who is still mourning the death of friends who died in the heat of battle, their memory stained by lingering accusations of a massacre.

The macro view is the wider story of how the media cover conflict zones, and how so many journalists managed to get this story wrong.

"Today, with live TV and instant deadlines and the Internet, in some sense we are demanding clarity of every situation that we see," Himel said. "But situations like this are very unclear. And because of that, a lot of information you get is also very unclear. This is a classic case."

Himel's film includes interviews with Palestinian fighters in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade who were there at the time -- ironically, Himel says, Palestinian fighters are far more forthcoming than many of the journalists he tried to talk to -- as well as senior editors at BBC-TV; The Independent's senior defense correspondent, Kim Sengupta; the Daily Telegraph's David Blair (who defends his view of events by saying he reported what he saw and merely reiterated first-hand accounts of Jenin residents he talked to); the Toronto Star's Olivia Ward, who disputes the accuracy of some of the conclusions drawn at the time; and the Times of London's Janine di Giovanni.

"The interesting thing is that, of all the people I interviewed, the one thing they all agreed on, without exception, was that where the journalist is coming from, his background, etc., has a big impact on how he reports things," says Himel.

"They all say, and I agree with them, that in many respects, objectivity is a fiction. It's not that we're not trying to give an accurate picture of what's going on, but we all come from somewhere. And that's something we all have to realize.

"The truth is, though, that some journalists have bigger axes to grind than others, on all sides. And that comes into play here, definitely -- especially in a case like Jenin."

BBC's initial reports of a massacre were the most damaging, because BBC is widely considered to be the standard bearer for reportage from the world's combat zones. BBC News assignment editor Malcolm Downing tells Himel in the film that, because of its reputation, people are naturally inclined to believe that what the BBC says to be true is true.

"Like everybody, we make mistakes," Downing tells Himel in the film, "and we try to own up to them when we do. . . The correction is lying behind, though. We never catch up. That's true of everybody else, as well as us."

In an ideal world, Himel says, rival media organizations would take a step back and agree not to jump to conclusions until they have a better grasp on what's going on.

"But that's not going to happen. We're all going to come up with our stories as fast as possible, especially in the age of live TV."

The difference, Himel says, for people who really want to be informed and are willing to make an effort, is whether the reporter's approach involves a healthy level of skepticism or whether the reporter is willing to accept first-person testimony -- 'I saw this, I saw that' -- at face value.

BBC showed little skepticism toward initial claims of massacre from the Palestinian side, Himel says, whereas CNN's domestic service was more circumspect.

In an interview with Palestinian senior negotiator Saeb Erekat, CNN's anchor at the time asked if Erekat would return and retract his statement if initial claims of more than 500 casualties proved to be inaccurate.

"If (Israeli claims of 70 casualties) are right and your initial numbers were wrong, will you come back here on our network and retract what you said?"

"Absolutely," Erekat said. "Absolutely. And I hope the numbers will be nothing. I hope the numbers will be zero."

In a later interview with Himel, Erekat admitted he made a mistake. "On that day, the Red Cross was not permitted to go to Jenin," Erekat told Himel. "Foreign journalists were kicked out of the Jenin area. . . Martin, we've known each other for the last 25 years. This is the only time I've said I've made a mistake, in all my interrogations."

But first impressions stick, veteran BBC correspondent James Reynolds tells Himel in the film. "Going around the world right now, if one was to ask anyone who watched the news of it, what do they think of Jenin, they think 'Jenin massacre'," Reynolds tells Himel.

"Those two words are linked. First impressions are very important. And perhaps, despite all the other reporting at the end, they are never rubbed out."

"When they were in Jenin, they spoke to Palestinians who gave them a very graphic account, which turned out to be inaccurate. They did not take those graphic accounts and then sit with Johnathan Van Caspel or with the Israeli IDF and really ask them what their side was, and bring an equal version out of it. They didn't. I really felt that if I was going to put Johnathan Van Caspel's side out there, I really had to get a hold of the people who were fighting against Johnathan Van Caspel. Which I did. Which is not simple."

Israël en de Arabische Revolutie

De Arabische revolutie die ruim een jaar geleden begon is nog niet over, maar de algemene contouren van de uitkomst van die revolutie worden inmiddels zichtbaar. De oude regimes die geen vrienden van Israël waren, maar die zich enigszins pragmatisch opstelden hebben plaats gemaakt voor met name religieuze krachten zoals de Moslimbroederschap in Egypte wiens werkelijke opstelling ten aanzien van Israël nog moet blijken, maar wiens ideologie, geschiedenis en recente uitspraken weinig goeds beloven.

Tegen deze achtergrond is er de afgelopen tijd weleens beweerd dat Israël snel de relaties met haar buren en vooral met de Palestijnen zou moeten verbeteren o.a. door zich achter de linies van mei 1967 terug te trekken en de bouw van nederzettingen op de Westelijke Jordaanoever te staken (zie bijvoorbeeld hier). Alleen op die manier zou Israël een snel groeiend internationaal isolement kunnen voorkomen en de dreiging van een oorlog met haar buren afwenden. Een heldere verwoording van deze 'vredesstrategie' is Mient Jan Fabers "Israël moet buigen", dat al een tijdje geleden in Trouw verscheen:

"Tijdens een recent bezoek aan Egypte maakte ik mij in toenemende mate zorgen over de toekomst van de staat Israël. Ondanks de verscheidenheid aan groepen en mensen die ik tegenkwam op het fameuze Tahrir-plein, was er duidelijk sprake van een gemeenschappelijke vijand - Israël - en een wederopstanding van het Arabisch nationalisme. Wat ik meemaakte, voorspelt weinig goeds voor de toekomst. Zo was er de bestorming van de ambassade van Israël, waarbij Egyptische militairen, enkele rijen dik, aanvankelijk toekeken. Een reactie ter plekke de volgende dag: "Sadat en Moebarak hebben Israël altijd de hand boven het hoofd gehouden ten koste van de Palestijnen. De rollen worden nu omgekeerd. De tijd is er rijp voor." Israël heeft twee mogelijkheden om de nieuwe tijd onder ogen te zien. Het kan het vredesproces laten voor wat het is - vooral een show voor zijn buitenlandse vrienden - en zich verschansen in zijn groeiend bastion, vertrouwend op militaire kracht, inclusief de atoombom. Of het kan zich realiseren dat er maar één weg is die leidt naar vrede met de Palestijnen en de andere Arabische buren en dat is door het opgeven van de bezetting."

Een aantal kleine nuanceringen en vraagtekens bij dit argument voor de zogenaamde vredesstrategie van Israël naar aanleiding van de Arabische revolutie:

In het verleden heeft Israël zich een aantal keer uit gebieden over de "grenzen" van mei 1967 teruggetrokken. De resultaten van deze terugtrekkingen waren over het algemeen negatief voor Israël. Deze negatieve ervaringen uit het verleden betekenen niet per definitie dat de vredesstrategie nooit zou kunnen werken, maar ze geven wel te denken. In het licht daarvan lijkt de stelligheid waarmee gezegd wordt dat een Israëlische terugtrekking achter de linies van mei 1967 een nieuwe tijdperk van vrede zou inluiden, op zijn minst overdreven.

In 2005 heeft Israël zich eenzijdig teruggetrokken uit de Gazastrook en in 2000 uit het zuiden van Libanon. De consequenties daarvan voor de veiligheid van Israël zijn in beide gevallen dramatisch slecht geweest. Beide gebieden zijn binnen de kortste keer onder de controle gekomen van zeer radicale terreurgroepen, Hamas in Gaza en Hizballah in Libanon. En zoals we allemaal weten, deze gebieden worden onder meer gebruikt als uitvalbases voor talloze aanvallen op Israëlische burgers en militairen en voor het stationeren van een enorme hoeveelheid wapens waarmee elke plaats in Israël inmiddels bereikt kan worden.

Deze territoriale concessies hebben de internationale positie en aanzien van Israël ook niet verbeterd. Door de snelle verslechtering van de veiligheidssituatie in deze gebieden was Israël al snel genoodzaakt om impopulaire maatregelen te nemen, zoals de gedeeltelijke blokkade van de Gazastrook en operatie 'Cast Lead' (2008/09). Deze maatregelen hebben vervolgens het internationale isolement en delegitimatie van Israël alleen maar in de hand gewerkt. Het Goldstonerapport, de Gazavloten en het mediacircus rond de Libanon-oorlog van 2006 zijn maar een aantal voorbeelden hiervan. De trieste les voor Israël is dat het eigenlijk niet zoveel uitmaakt wat het doet. De geweldscyclus is niet zomaar te doorbreken door politiek correcte acties, o.a. omdat partijen zoals de Hamas, Islamitisch Jihad, Tanzim, Syrië, Hezbollah of Iran geen belang bij een vreedzame co-existentie hebben, en dus zou Israël genoodzaakt blijven om politiek incorrecte maatregelen te nemen, die de internationale positie van Israël in de regel niet helpen.

Helaas lijkt de vrede tussen Israël en Egypte het zelfde lot beschoren. Die vrede waarbij Egypte alle gebieden terug kreeg die door Israël in juni 1967 veroverd waren, en die tot voor kort het hoopvolle symbool was van de mogelijkheid van een vreedzame co-existentie tussen Israël en haar Arabische buurlanden, is sinds de Egyptische revolutie bijna een scheldwoord geworden. Deze vrede zou immers het instrument zijn van duistere belangen (lees deze blog van de geniale hoofdredacteur van nrc next), een belangrijke oorzaak van de onderdrukking van de Egyptische bevolking door de militaire regimes van Sadat en Mubarak en een vrijbrief voor Israël om de Palestijnen te mogen onderdrukken. Het directe resultaat van deze afwaardering van die vrede is dat zelfs Egyptische ministers tegenwoordig openlijk oproepen tot "herziening" van dat vredesakkoord.

Ook op veiligheidsgebied zijn de recente ontwikkelingen niet bepaald hoopvol. Sinds de Egyptische revolutie heeft Israël te maken gehad met dodelijke aanslagen op Israëlische burgers en militairen vanuit Egypte, de gasleiding van Egypte naar Israël en Jordanië is al 8 keer opgeblazen, de Israëlische ambassade in Caïro was bestormd en de Sinaï is een soort niemandsland geworden dat van vijandige elementen wemelt. Daarnaast zien we de zorgwekkende toenadering tussen Abbas en Hamas, die door het 'nieuwe' Egypte gesponsord en gesteund wordt en die volgens kenners eerder op de radicalisering van Abbas duidt dan op een nieuwe gematigde koers van de Hamas. Abbas past zich immers aan aan het nieuwe door Islamisten gedomineerde Midden-Oosten.

Anti-Israëlische gevoelens in Egypte, en de rest van de Arabische wereld, zijn niet noodzakelijk het resultaat van het Palestijnse-Israëlische conflict en daarom zou het oplossen van dat conflict die gevoelens waarschijnlijk ook niet doen verdwijnen. In zoverre zulke gevoelens bepalend zijn voor het beleid van Egypte en andere Arabische staten ten aanzien van Israël zou de vredesstrategie daarom waarschijnlijk niet werken.

De vaak felle anti-Israëlische sentimenten in bijvoorbeeld de Egyptische samenleving, die ook Mient Jan Faber zijn opgevallen, hebben wellicht iets te maken met het Israëlische-Palestijnse conflict. Menige Egyptenaar voelt zich immers verbonden met het trieste lot van de Palestijnen en houdt Israël daarvoor verantwoordelijk. Wat echter opvalt aan dit anti-Israëlische sentiment is het uitzonderlijke agressieve en selectieve karakter daarvan. We zitten, bij wijze van spreken, al jaren te wachten op de bestorming van de ambassades van Libië, Syrië, Turkije, Soedan, Algerije, Jemen, Afghanistan, IranDit bewijst natuurlijk niet dat de woede van de menigte in Egypte (of elders in de Arabische wereld) geheel ongegrond is, maar wel, dat die woede nog andere motieven heeft.

Te denken valt in dit verband aan de interne politieke functie van anti-Israël-propaganda in de Arabische wereld. Het opwekken van anti-Israëlische sentimenten is immers een van de manieren waarop impopulaire Arabische regeringen hun positie probeerden te bestendigen. Een andere bron van anti-Israëlische en anti-Joodse sentimenten is het Islamisme. De Moslimbroederschap (MB), met haar religieuze Naziachtige Jodenhaat heeft een bijzondere negatieve invloed gehad op de ontwikkeling van de Joodse-Arabische verhoudingen, die afhankelijk niet vijandig waren. Naast religie spelen nationale gevoelens ook een belangrijke rol, zeker in staten zoals Egypte, die een relatief sterke nationalistische traditie gecombineerd met een lange en soms pijnlijke oorlogsgeschiedenis met Israël hebben.

Dat de felle anti-Israëlische en anti-Joodse sentimenten in de Arabische wereld niet volledig toe te schrijven zijn aan de "bezetting" van de Westelijke Jordaanoever in juni 1967 is ook eenvoudig af te leiden van het feit dat zulke sentimenten al lang voor die bezetting ruimschoots aanwezig waren. De proliferatie van Naziachtige Jodenhaat door de MB in het toenmalige Palestina en Egypte vond plaats al in de jaren dertig en veertig van de vorige eeuw. De Arabische landen hebben in 1947 de oprichting van de staat Israël door de VN niet erkend en hebben Israël al in 1948/49 geprobeerd van de kaart te vegen. En hier een fragment uit een toesprak van de toenmalige Syrische minister van defensie Hafez el Assad uit mei 1967, dus net voor de Zesdaagse oorlog:

"Our forces are now entirely ready not only to repulse the aggression, but to initiate the act of liberation itself, and to explode the Zionist presence in the Arab homeland. The Syrian army, with its finger on the trigger, is united....I, as a military man, believe that the time has come to enter into a battle of annihilation" (Leibler, I. (1972), The Case For Israel, Australia: The Globe Press, p. 60.)

Als we de Palestijnen zelf mogen geloven, of beter gezegd de Palestijnse politieke leiders, dan draait het conflict met Israël niet zozeer om de "grenzen", maar om het bestaan van de staat Israël aan zich. Hedendaagse Palestijnse politieke leiders, van Abbas tot de Hamas, laten nauwelijks een gelegenheid aan hen voorbij gaan zonder de wereld (in het Arabisch) te vertellen dat ze de vernietiging van de staat Israël nastreven en dat ze de verschillende akkoorden en afspraken met Israël slechts als stappen zien op weg naar dat einddoel. Dit is bijvoorbeeld Abbas Zaki een prominent lid van "president"Abbas' Fatah-beweging:

"Een akkoord zou moeten gebaseerd worden op de grenzen van 4 juni 1967. Wanneer wij zeggen dat een akkoord op deze grenzen zou moeten worden gebaseerd, begrijpt president [Abbas], begrijpen wij en weet iedereen dat het grotere doel niet in één keer kan worden verwezenlijkt. Wanneer Israël zich uit Jeruzalem terugtrekt, de 650.000 kolonisten evacueert en de [veiligheids-]muur ontmantelt, wat zal er dan van Israël worden? Dat zal het einde [van Israël] betekenen Als wij zeggen dat wij Israël willen wegvagen [van de map] Komaan zeg, zoiets [zeggen] ligt veel te moeilijk. Het is geen [aanvaardbare] politiek om zoiets te zeggen. Zeg deze dingen niet aan de wereld. Hou die voor jezelf. (Met dank aan brabosh.com).

Een dit is vers van de pers:

Dit radicalisme, dat duidelijke racistische en genocidale trekken heeft, is stevig geworteld in de geschiedenis van de Palestijnse strijd, die al in de jaren twintig van de vorige eeuw begon en die van begin af aan gericht was tegen de Joodse aanwezigheid in Palestina en later tegen het bestaan van de Joodse staat zelf. Het Israëlische-Palestijnse conflict is ontstaan en heeft zich ontwikkeld in de context van de Arabische nationale en religieuze strijd tegen het bestaan van Israël en niet in de context van de "bezetting" van juni 1967.

Een feit is, dat de Fatah-beweging van de huidige "president' Abbas, die oorspronkelijk de vernietiging van de staat Israël nastreefde, is al in 1959 opgericht. Deze beweging heeft haar bestaan veelal te danken gehad aan het onderdak en de steun van verschillende Arabische regimes. De PLO, de Palestijnse koepelorganisatie waar de Fatah een onderdeel van is, is in mei 1964 opgericht, dus drie jaar voor de "bezetting". Het oorspronkelijke doel van de PLO was ook de gewapende "bevrijding" van Palestina, wat in feite neer kwam op de vernietiging van staat Israël. De PLO was opgericht op initiatief van de Arabische Liga en had in beginsel geen nationalistische Palestijnse oriëntatie, maar een Pan-Arabische oriëntatie.

Dit politieke radicalisme van de huidige Palestijnse leiderschap heeft ook wortels in de religieuze animositeit tegen de Joden die ook los staat van de "bezetting" van juni 1967. De Hamas, die wellicht de sterkste politieke beweging in de Palestijnse samenleving is, is de Palestijnse tak van de streng religieuze, Egyptische Moslimbroederschap. Hoewel de Hamas zelf pas in 1987 is opgericht, de invloed van de MB en haar religieuze denkbeelden op de Palestijnse strijd gaat terug naar de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw. Historici zijn het er vrijwel over eens, dat de MB en de moefti van Jeruzalem met hun religieuze fanatisme, gewelddadigheid, Naziachtige Jodenhaat en propagandamethoden een sleutelrol speelden in de radicalisering van de Palestijnen en de escalatie van hun strijd tegen de Joodse aanwezigheid in het toenmalige Palestina en later tegen het bestaan van de Joodse staat.

Ten slotte moet men ook erkennen dat deze radicale stelling met name ook te maken heeft met de belangen van de huidige Palestijnse politieke elites. Deze elites hebben hun macht, aanzien en rijkdom bijna geheel te danken aan het Palestijnse-Israëlische conflict. Het opblazen van bussen en restaurants en het beschieten van Israëlische steden en dorpen is een miljardenbusiness geworden en een bron van internationale status en politieke macht.

Israël en haar vrienden zouden in alle eerlijkheid moeten erkennen dat deze radicale politieke stellingname deels te wijten is aan de ervaringen van bijna 45 jaar Israëlische overheersing. Maar aan de andere kant zouden Mient Jan Faber en zijn geestverwanten ook moeten erkennen dat Israël- en Jodenhaat in de Arabische wereld en onder de Palestijnen in sterke mate verankerd zijn in sentimenten, belangen en denkbeelden die los staan van de "bezetting" en daarom dat het beëindigen daarvan misschien geen vrede zal brengen.

De Arabische revoluties van het afgelopen jaar hebben de situatie van Israël lastiger gemaakt, maar de vredesstrategie die door vele in het Westen wordt gezien als de manier om uit die lastige situatie te komen is een gevaarlijke illusie. Dit betekent niet dat Israël niets kan en moet doen om haar relaties met haar buurlanden en de Palestijnen te verbeteren en dat Israël een vrijbrief heeft om de waardigheid en belangen van de Palestijnse bevolking aan haar militaire laars te lappen. Het betekent wel dat wij misschien op een andere manier over deze kwestie moeten gaan denken. Maar dat is voor een andere keer.

Israeli historian weighs in on Newt Gingrich’s ‘invented’ remark

I and everyone else have had the chance to opine on Newt Gingrich’s comment that the Palestinians are an “invented” people. Still, I felt that Benny Morris could provide a unique perspective. Morris is one of the leading lights of the so-called New Historians, a group of Israelis who a couple of decades ago radically revised the understanding of the Israeli War of Independence, uncovering the full extent of the Palestinians’ plight, including the Jewish expulsion of Palestinians living in what is now Israel (Morris’ seminal book is The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem). A man of the left (he says; some would disagree), he supports a two-state solution but more recently Morris has blamed the failure of the peace process largely on Arab intransigence. I spoke with him yesterday over the phone (he lives in Israel) about the historical basis and political uses of Gingrich’s rhetoric.

Here’s what Newt Gingrich said last week: “Remember there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs, and were historically part of the Arab community. And they had a chance to go many places.” How do you respond to that?
There’s something to it historically, and there’s a problem with it politically and contemporaneously. Groups of people change. Before 1920, the Arabs in Palestine didn’t call themselves Palestinians, and didn’t consider themselves a separate people. They were Muslims. They were inhabitants of Jerusalem, or Hebron. They were Arabs.

Beginning in the 1920s, they took on an additional identity, which became their primary identity. By the late 1930s, they saw themselves as being Palestinians—historians may disagree on the exact point. But from the early 1920s on, they began thinking of themselves as an Arab people separate from the Arab people of Transjordan or Syria.

Today, a group of people define themselves as a people, and that’s really what counts. If ten million say, “We are Palestinians,” that’s the major definition of a people, in addition to language, common culture, common history. Who is Newt Gingrich to really argue about it?

But he has a certain truth historically. For a long time, even after the beginning of the struggle with the Zionists, they were just Arabs. There was no province called Palestine in the Ottoman Empire. Palestine was cut up into a number of sub-districts which belonged to Damascus or Beirut. There was never a separate administrative entity.

Did they, as Gingrich alleges, have a chance to go many places? I think he is referring to the Palestinian refugees of 1947-48.
I don’t know what that means, I don’t want to speculate. Could they have gone to the Arab states and settled there? They could have, but the Arab states didn’t treat them as equals. Syria didn’t. Jordan didn’t in relation to the Bedouins who had always been there. If he’s talking about that, yes, the Arab states could have absorbed them, but they didn’t, and the Palestinians didn’t want to be absorbed, and Israel didn’t want to take them back, so they ended up in a limbo called refugeedom.

Some pointed to the historian Joan Peters as the source of Gingrich’s history.
She wrote a book, From Time Immemorial, but it was actually panned by most critics, most historians thought it wasn’t solid history. It was written with a political bent. It’s not based on good archival work, good analysis. It’s not taken seriously by most historians.

Look, there were Arabs who migrated into Palestine (this is part of her argument). Palestine became more habitable, and Arabs immigrated in certain numbers. But I think the numbers are negligible. I don’t think any serious demographer thinks most of the Palestinians were recent comers.

Given the validity of Palestinian peoplehood, do the Palestinians have a greater right to the land than the Israelis do? A lesser one? An equal one?
People who live on the land—and nobody questions that many of them lived on the land—have a right to live there. And usually that right is followed by the right of sovereignty—that’s how the world is built. And the Jews have the right as well of being here—historical reasons. And the Jews also live here, which gives them the same right. Right of presence.

What do you make of the Republicans’ discourse on the issue, and the Americans’ generally?
I’m don’t know much about the discourse. Look, George Bush said it’s right that there should be a Palestinian state. Obama’s adopted that. Clinton implied it. It makes sense that the land should be divided into two sovereign states. My belief is that Arabs don’t want that, and that’s why it hasn’t happened.

Have you ever met any of the Republican presidential candidates, or President Obama?
I haven’t met any of them. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting any of these characters.
